Ah ok, thanks for that bit of "recent" history regarding the tunnel. I even said to myself as I was doing that walk "even if I don't find any gold, I've had this great walk out of it." Just as well given my lack of showing in the pan.
I actually took my detector (it's just a cheap Kogan one) to do some detecting but had read that either detecting is not permitted... or if it is, it's only along the creek bed... do you know anything about that? I'm not in a huge hurry to arrange to go back (it's about an extra half hour there and same back for a total of about 2 hours either way)... but if I'm allowed to detect along the walking paths etc I could be interested. With my detector I wouldn't be expecting to find gold but would be keen to see if I might uncover an old coin or something.
It's a lovely area and a number of years ago when I first panned there I actually managed a decent little picker... it remains my biggest piece (which is why I wanted to go back).
I believe there are two other creeks nearby that could be worth having a pan in also?
I used to live around Watsonia, then Hoppers Crossing and we now live up next to Ballarat so I'm not starved for choices of where to go... just when I can go and money to get the car there ;)
 
AtomRat's probably the goto to ask for panning creeks around Melbourne, but I think you'd have far more options for both panning and detecting out your way. There's no detecting in Warrandyte State Parks.
 
BigWave... you could be right there... I'm now surrounded by it... just need the time (and wife permission) to get out and have an explore.
There are a couple of spots I have in mind to do some prospecting I just need to double check the right to do so (Enfield I'm fairly sure mention you can on their website but wouldn't mind having a decent look around Black Hill).
It would still be nice if with our Miners rights we got access to a map of Victoria (PDF is fine) that listed either all the permitted creeks or if there are less to list then all the exempted creeks and had colour coding of what plots of land we can prospect on... yes I realise that would be lazy of me and I could do it myself... but it would be nice :D
 
You're welcome Jaros... just doing the little I can to give back to this great community. I did find it funny that some of the information around there basically states it's the first official gold find in Victoria, then people went there to find their own and most came away empty... kind of a fizzle after that flashy start I guess.
 
Blennus, the Warrandyte claim is disputed, although living there I like to think it's true. Also search the DEPI website (they even provide burn details) for detectable areas near you, and may Mrs Blennus give you time off and the gold gods cause you to walk over "The Big One".
 
I took the detector down to the creek after researching, and discovering that I could do it there, but like you...couldn't see those orange markers, so stuck pretty close to the creek.

My finds were plenty of rubbish, cans, nails, wire, and an old mobile fun, something from the mid 00's...it would be great if there were some good finds available in the area, but so trashed.

So I tagged along one weekend with a few from here and we went out Warrandyte way, then a couple of weeks later out with BigWave and found my first bit....hooray.

Maybe there are other places in the area - I have a friend with some property in Healesville, so heading out there for the weekend for socialising and a swing (not sure what order that will be in though).
 
Thanks BigWave. I'll likely get off my butt at some point and make myself some maps with the DEPI info... possibly GeoVic or Google Earth... I just want something that is simple to read in the field (or before getting to the field) so I don't have to worry I'm in the wrong spot... then I can start adding the other important details such as Leads and former diggings etc and start to narrow down the search radius... something like that.
It was once pointed out to me that I'm an ideas person... ie I have plenty of ideas but the follow through can be lacking (many partly finished/started projects).

I had a feeling I heard that claim was disputed... I know there has been gold there... after all a number of years ago when I first panned it I got the biggest bit I've ever had (having said that it's not bigger than a grain of sugar). Everyone wants bragging rights I guess. Gold is where you find it and the hunt can be just as fun (almost).

Mate, I hear you loud n clear being a newbie myself.
I had this discussion with a guy in person at the miners license office. He told me they stopped printing maps due to a liability. If an error was printed on the map they would be liable. I need to find a large printed map to put a personal one together, eliminating all the exempted list SYSTEMS and NP, reserve areas etc..........This is going to take a long time out of the field to do. One day :)

goldengoose... that's understandable... shame they can't just put a disclaimer on it with wording that would free them of liability... also that way if you were found in the field and you were in an area that had changed to no longer being permitted... if you could reference the map number or something (assuming they would issue updated ones) then they could let you off with a warning and just advise you to get the latest.

But yes... failing that happening I guess we all just have to make our own... might have to get out the old Paint.net and grab some screen caps of Google Earth and see what I can muster up... perhaps we could make it a community thing and upload the map on here for people to proof check for any mistakes etc then share for all.

Having said that I do point out again I'm not bad at getting ideas... it's the follow through that sucks ;)
 
Hi all,

I was curious as the the legalities down at Andersons Creek in Warrandyte. A park ranger there told me only panning and river sluicing was allowed there, and that highbankers with water pumps were not allowed, even if they were fed by shovels and buckets.

I was under the impression that general prospecting laws were applicable there and that highbankers were allowed. Or is this some sort of exempt area with their own rules?
 
The Panning Location on Anderson,s Creek is within the Warrandyte State Park.
Only a small section of the Creek is available for prospecting under special conditions of the Park Management plan, which can be revised
or altered if the prospecting activity allowance causes damage to the creek, an example is people digging into the banks which has often
occurred in the past.

I have done limited panning there in the late 80s / early 90s can't recall it been Rich?
Its more for an educational purpose, school groups etc, or Melbourne based families wanting to take the kids gold panning for an afternoon.

According to the Exempted stream list its the only location available to prospecting within the entire Yarra Valley. :eek:

There are more suitable locations in other Victorian Goldfields further from Melbourne.

I would agree with the Park Ranger stating that no High Bankers are allowed, its basically the same rules as the Sutherland Creek small panning area
location at Steglitz.
 
As mentioned already, Anderson's creek is managed by parks victoria and they have allowed panning and sluicing only in a small section of the creek.

Setting a highbancker up there would be a bit of a waste of time though. It's fun to visit when you first start out prospecting but the gold is nothing to write home about and your lucky to come home with more than a few specks for your efforts
 
The last time i visited there, just for a look and walk to see the gold memorial and old mines, there was
a sign in view from the car park, stating that gold panning is only permitted in the creek bed, from
memory that sign has been there for years.

After Miners Den did a U Tube video on the Creek the prospecting accessible area of the Creek was reduced due to
increased popularity.

A few years back i think on this forum site a panner went there on a Sunday and Parks & Vic Police turned up wanting to
know who had dug into the banks and started digging up the car park in search for alluvial gold or decide targets, it had occurred the previous weekend?
 
I am sure it is a waste of time, it is just a local place to take the kids for a bit of fun for an arvo outing. I guess I won't be setting up any equipment there!

What the go with Andersons Creek??? Is it still allowed to the panned in the Warrandyte State Park?? As has noticed Parks vic has removed all mention of being able to pan in there and their maps etc that they use to have up marking the gold panning areas etc and have also dropped the prospecting part of list of activities allowed in the park

Any thoughts ??
 
Your Miners Right should give a link on where to find that info ......

yep knew it was on the no go river list has been there for years. BUT a small section of it could be panned in the state park owned by PARKS vic and was allowed eg the same as reedy creek for a example that section in the state park can be panned that also on the no go list
