Metal detecting is known to most people. But its not extensively applied in school actually. In my humble opinion, metal detecting can be applied to history and science lessons.
Whats your opinion?
Is it a necessity for students to study metal detectors?

I suppose if it was a subject it
would include,
Respect the Land,
Study it's History,
Learn Geography,
Learn to read a Map,
Survival Skills,
Safety,
Take your rubbish,
Fill your Holes in,
Respect private property,
Respect Others,
Learn detector types and operation,
Have a deep and well versed understanding of the laws,
Above all, Learn to enjoy what we have here in Australia.
Just my Thoughts. :D :D :D

Hi Guys, A few years back when my grand children were in school i had a afternoon with metal detector, gold, smokey courts, sapphires, and opal, I gave a talk on opal mining then gem stone, Then the detector the children all had listen to the sound of gold threw the speaker, The next day they had to rite a sa on what they like best, A great day made feel worth while, Ron.

I don't mind students knowing about metal detectors but would not like to see bus loads of kids going thru the golden triangle. Just my opinion.

Theres already 100,000s of Prospectors with detectors going through the GT now, it can't support anymore.
Best to teach Art & Cooking in schools, we need more cooks & artists, mining boom is in decline.

Maybe they need to stop selling metal detectors all together then and ban forums.................or help educate responsibility for young aussies while creating a local tourism boom.

Too bloody right, my wife can't cook to save herself, I bloody do it all.

You cant teach passion, teaching them about nature and the history of gold mining will trigger the bug in the ones that have it , teach them to cook and all the basic skills for life first , hobbies and intrests will come naturally .

You could put a study topic together on the history of gold and include modern techniques. Whether the kids could be bothered or not is an unknown. If their primary school age it would create excitement for sure, secondary aged students I think you'd struggle.

My grandkids are keen and will be for some time I suspect, on the other hand my teenage sons are hot and cold.

Hey Doug,

I agree with your list but this would be more of life experiences that all fossickers/prospectors should learn and adhere by. :Y: :) There would not be enough time in school for the students learn all this let alone stay focused on. I think too many of the younger ones expect results quicker than putting the time in.

Cheers

Doug

pokemon was a good example until slowly people thought now iv'e caught em what the hell do I do with em

I have an attention span of a dead goldfish but heatho watching sports on t.v. and playing it is a different thing all together.
My kids were the greatest example of the screen age beginning. Son is diagnosed with juvenile photosensitive epilepsy and neurosurgeons are expecting a big spike of cases in years to come.

The basics are essential of course but most if not all of that education is or will be taught from screens and I think prospecting can be divided to a lot of areas, not just to gold. It could be a great alternative non contact sport type lesson with kids getting some self worth out of it.
