Well done mate and it is something to be truly proud of, i myself struggle hugely with alcoholism, i ruined my family and some friendships because of my drinking, i have done AA, quit straight out etc and always find a way to justify one or two which starts the downward fall again, stay strong and keep up the good work buddy

Well done Ramjet, that's a top effort mate.
Being able to identify the problem, admit it and do something about it is half the battle.
I wish you all the strength and will power to keep on top.

Ramjet, great effort. Looks like a lot of us have an affinity with the demon, me included.
Keep it up .
Cheers. :p

Yes Jaros, a song from the great man himself!

"I'll wash away your lies
And have you hypnotized
There'll be no compromise today
I'll share your life of shame
I think you know my name
I'll introduce myself again

I'm the demon alcohol
Demon alcohol
I'll get you"

And that's one guy that would know.

Love of food and drink often go together, and what you have done is just fantastic. I like a drink, and could have ended up in trouble just like my father. However, I was able to (mostly) get a lot more sensible about it in the last few years. But I really admire what you have done, that's fore sure.

Exactly WS!

Most call Elvis the king of Rock'n'Roll.......for me, Ozzy was always the king and always will be!

He should have been dead many moons ago, but these days he sips Lemon Tea from his English mansion.

He credits Sharon for being the one that saved his life, but he also had to show strength in character to beat what he did.

Behind every great man, is an even greater woman. ;)

Not to jack the thread from RJ's efforts but I bought the season 1&2 of the Osborne's series, absolutely had me cracking up. Found out a few weeks ago Ozzy was off the wagon for most of it and completely plastered, doesn't seem as funny now.

Good onya Rodger that's a great effort.
I have never had a problem with the drink but did smoke a pack a day for 30 odd years and gave that up 6 years ago.

I don't know if giving up smoking is as hard as giving up the drink but it took quite a bit of will power to give up. Feel so much better for it now.

I also went on "Light and Easy" a few years ago and hit the gym at the same time and I was so much healthier for it but I fell off the rails when I went on a holiday and never got back into the diet or exercise when we got home.
back up to 100kg now so I really must start again.

I also have a couple of Grandson's now so all the more reason to get back to a healthy state.

Congratulations on the milestone, it's a great effort Rodger you should feel mighty proud of yourself. Hopefully it will only get easier from here.

Hope everything has worked out ok with your Grandson. Love mine to bits as I'm sure you do with yours.

Wooly

Thanks again everyone. The support from the members of this forum is amazing.

Metamorphic that first quote is brilliant. I'll be reading that one often. Where is it from?

Beach Detecting Addict you are a stronger man than me. Thinking I could control myself and only have a few was a big part of the problem. Funny because I could go out for dinner or to a BBQ and only drink 2 or 3 light beers so I could drive home. Bourbon is my poison.

Kiwigolddigger. Sorry there is no cure for gold fever but generally it is not as destructive as other addictions.

Stoneage. Mate Get some help is my advice to anyone who drinks too much. I tried to give up more than once. Always said I was in control. I booked myself into detox once. That was an interesting experience. Watching the younger people come down off whatever their drug of choice was. Girls crying and vomiting. It was good for me and I didn't drink for a couple of weeks after. But of course I started again, thinking I was on top of it. What I didn't do was have a rehab plan in place for when I came out of detox.

I have tried to give up drinking several times. My doctor recommended taking a drug but I'm anti drug. Ha ha. Now is see a drug and alcohol addiction specialist and a counselor once a month each. Following whatever course recommended. I take a drug called Antabuse. If I drink I will get violently ill requiring a trip to hospital. I did stop taking it when I was on holidays to have a "couple" of drinks. No such thing with me.

When I was in detox we had AA and NA come in for meetings. Not for me but it obviously works for some.
At the moment my 2 step daughters are not speaking to me because of the way I carried on when I was drinking. Hopefully in time they will forgive me.

My plan is to never drink again. Keep taking my Antabuse for at least another 6 months as recommended by the specialist.

Life is much better. My relationship with my wife has always been good and she has stood by me, knowing it was the alcohol and not me being an arsehole. We are now as happy as we were when we first got together.

Life is too short to spend it smashed off ya head.

Thanks again everyone.

Thank you John. It is what it is. No point bullshitting about it. If it helps one person then I'll be happy.
It is the wife and kids who have suffered most from my drinking.

A huge thank you to everyone here for their support of Ramjet, you are his second family and he wouldn't have made it through the last few years without this group. It has been the hardest times struggling with this addiction and I am so very proud of Ramjet for fighting his way back from the horrible lows that alcohol brought with it. Hey Rod,

Its a quote from Raymond Chandlers novel 'The long goodbye' written by him in 1953.

The novel is mainly fiction, but some say its his best work as it includes many autobiographical elements from Chandler's life.

He wrote it as his wife was dying, and her illness and eventual death had a profound effect on him, driving him into fits of melancholy as well as talk of, and even attempts at suicide.

The novel contains two characters obviously based on Chandler himself and both of them highlight Chandler's awareness of his own flaws such as alcoholism as well as his insecurities (e.g. in the value of his writing).

We may be only cyber buddies rod, but we respect what your doing mate and are your friends all the same!

Good luck mate, always here if you need me.
