Hi folks, out for another detect at last, first location of interest the site of some former forestry cottages, unfortunately access was limited, so had to quickly think of somewhere else. One snippet of info I gained from my father last night, was that one of the cottages was actually our former home in 1973, so I still want to see if I can gain access to the site on the future.
Second site was a former Shepherd's cottage, a site I briefly visited a couple of years ago with the Minelab Explorer SE Pro. 10 minutes there was enough to realise that the Explorer wasn't the correct tool for the job, as the ground is absolutely peppered with iron junk, requiring a faster recovering detector to locate decent targets inbetween the iron. Fast forward to today, and a completely different story with the Deus, targets everywhere, including right down the middle of the track. I literally put coil to ground directly behind my SUV, and first target was a shallow 1948-1949 SA Dog tag in pretty poor condition (damp ground in low lying area). Wandering down the track, target after target came to light, consisting of mostly horse tack.
Wandering into the forest, more evidence of a former dwelling was unearthed, including the clock & oil lamp parts, tap, door lock, a crusty fob watch, and a pretty good condition lighter. Not sure what the big key was used for, though guessing it may be for a clock. The Australian Military Forces button was found in the track winrow.
After spending a few hours circumnavigating the site, it appears that the targets are a lot more widespread than first thought, so plenty of ground to still cover - will probably head back out there tomorrow for another look. No coins as yet, though at this stage I am only investigating the more obvious targets for the first run, will check for deeper targets as the junk gets depleted and with a larger coil. Settings for today was the same as usual, just flicking between 3 & 4 on the reactivity, depending on junk densitiy - frequency was 14kHz.
