I've been researching an old abandoned church and finally decided to go and take a look. All of my research leads me to believe that the church was built sometime in the early to mid 1800s however the coins found tell a slightly different story, all mid 1900's. The ground was reasonably soft and there was very little trash about. Most of the coins were found at around 4-5", so I'm going to take bigger coil next time to see whats down a bit deeper.

After an hour or so detecting I ended up with 3 Penny's, 1943, 1944 and 1952 and a 1948 Sixpence, I also picked up a religious pendant which bears the words "Remembrance of Confirmation".

Never tried asking people I don't know. Just stuck to public area's or people I know. Do you ask often & what the responses most of the time.

I don't ask very often, only when needed. The responses have been fine so far, people are usually OK with it as long as your not destroying the place and making sure to fill in your holes as you go.

Hi Nugget, I have several sites that I have been to and the same result. In my opinion the really old coins are still there! If it is in a low area in the Hunter Valley I think the really old coins are down very deep. I am fairly certain the problem is flood mud that has been deposited there over the last 150 years or so, and the coins could well be out of reach. The best time to hit that spot again is straight after this rain has cleared up. Easy digging and the detector will hear the coins better and punch a bit deeper. Go real slow and low, they are still there!

Took two of my younger brothers out for an hour or so today and here are some of the finds.

1919 Half Penny

Pressure Release Valve, this was buried in a sealed plastic bag, at first I thought it was a roll of coins, that was followed by the thought that it might be some sort of hand grenade or home made explosive lol.

Unusual sort of find. Wonder what it is off. Any hint as to what would have been working in the area?

Other than say a lawn mower / slasher I can't think of anything in the area that would require such a thing.

I headed out for the day with forum members Bugsey and Taz to test out some gear at a nearby creek and came across a site that has never been detected before. I manage to pull a few old coins in the pouring rain, including my oldest coin to date .
