I found this 1856 penny yesterday in the parklands near my home . Great condition considering where it was ( low swampy ground ). The oldest coin I have found so far . It is a bit different to old pennies I have found before, the date is on the head side , and it it is about 2mm smaller than a normal penny and only 2mm bigger than a halfpenny . It has a hole drilled in it , I think perhaps it was worn by someone as a good luck charm maybe .01E17166-BFD9-41A6-ADDE-145EEB09365F.jpeg880BFBBD-923F-4977-9362-CF6F1CCC3EF7.jpeg

Nice one! I think this one might be a pre-1860 half penny, which is why it's got an in-between size. The old copper pennies and half pennies were even bigger than the later bronze ones. Never found a Victoria copper half penny myself, only a George III which I was pretty rapt with.

Victoria Young Head with date below Half penny 1838 -1860 are 28mm Weight 9.46 g
Victoria Young Head with date below Penny 1838 - 1860 are 34mm Weight 18.82g
Hope this helps.
Great Find.

Thank you for your info. It is a halfpenny,it is 28mmwide and 8.59grams ( a bit of loss for wear and tear ). I found a 1877 halfpenny about a metre away but in terrible condition.
