In certain larger sapphires or zircon etc. if the shape permits, can the larger parts that get cut off around the pavillion be used to facet itself? is that a thing?

Larger rough can be cut into pieces, it's often done when there are fracture lines in a large rough, then one looks at faceting a number of smaller stones off the one large rough.

I posted an example of this last year with 3 Sapphires cut from one piece of rough. https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/search.php?search_id=1389136751&p=10 scroll down to post 273. You can clearly see the fracture line in the rough, this was the first saw cut and the off cut produced the biggest of the 3 gems.

How manys cts (approx range like 10ct? 30ct?) does one that is pretty good shape have to be to cut like 4ct +

Somewhere around 20cts+ would be a starting point.

Australia has a number of facetors that hold their own in International competition and often win both individual and team awards.

Sapphires and Zircon from my trip to grabben gullen, first time I've found so many, only ever found one or two before so I am very happy about it. These are just some of the photos of the 34 sapph and zirc -

Sapphires Sstein and I found on a recent trip to Grabben Gullen, some of the best and biggest stones I've found at this area and ever!
First 4 photos are of a 3.5ct, probably the nicest sapphire I've found to-date
The 5th photo is 4.5ct
And the rest are some of the better sapphires from the trip
Last photo is of some of the Spinels we found, largest one (the flattish one) 21.5ct!!

I wish the photos could do the stones justice, the look far more magnificent in person.

Im also looking for someone to cut a few sapphires, zircons and spinels. If you'd like to offer your service please PM me.

Nice hunting, try the Paramatta Holroyd Lapidary Club to see if any of their members are able to assist.

They have a cutting room for training and if you are interested, they may be able to get you started on a great extension of your hobby.

Black spinel are fun to cut and take a great polish too.

Crush them, you may be surprised... Pyrite and Gold are best mates....

Unfortunately these are from Balfour in Tassy and only copper and tin were found there. Have got some nice gold from crushing pyrite speccies from the Beaconsfield mine waste dumps but unfortunately the new lease holders have discovered this goldmine and are currently excavating and processing it and hoping to recover 30m worth of gold 8.(

Found this 16.6ct sapphire at a new spot I started digging at grabben gullen, if it wasn't for the distinct blue colour I would of thought it was a spinel this size.
Finding larger and better ones In this new spot, so hope to have many more sapphires to post next week. (third photo sapphire is on the coin, next to two spinels. sorry for the dirty scales lol)
