Although I live within stones throw of areas to work I love nothing more than packing the truck up and hitting the road to work unknown ground. If i put $100 of diesel in the truck I can get 6 hours driving in $40 for beer $50 food all equipment has paid for itself many tikes over. Im hapoy if I get a gram a day. Working new ground im happy to get a picker. Havent sold any gold for a while the experience is the value.

Hmmm your post has me thinking GD, gold timeshare, funny how i moved to be closer (certainly not the only reason) and yet i still try and get away for day trips! The irony of it is not lost on me, gold at the doorstep and hunting other areas.

Never found enough to cover my expenses personally and worked out on average I earn about a dollar an hour (200 hours detecting will (so far) bring in at least a couple hundred dollars in gold) I enjoy the outdoors though so walking around bush for hours on end with my detector is leisure not work to me.

Cost is irrelevant.
Can'. put a price on the lifestyle.

Why do blokes pay $40k+ for a boat, launching fees, fuel, bait, tackle and come home with half a dozen flatties, AND they are happy.

Well it depends on your circumstances. If you are on 100K + you may not care about costs. If you are pensioner the costs matter a lot. For me prospecting serves two things. I get some exercise that I normally would not. I'm the type of person that just can't walk aimlessly around or jump up and down just to get some exercise. And I love prospecting. But if my prospecting activities were not costs neutral, I could not afford it. My coin shooting more or less pay for other prospecting that has been so far unprofitable. The return from the parks and ovals around where I live is diminishing. So I have to find some gold or sapphire so to keep going. But that's nothing new to me. When I was mining opal it was offtten touch and go to continue or be broke.
Just remember next GFC or whatever it is going to be called may eat your super as it did to me. Gold is Forever!

Ah who cares the cost. Its a hobby and few of us will ever even find their first ounce of gold.

The real treasure is enjoying the great aussie bush and for some who actually have an interest learning the history of our country and its gold rushes

I used to silently groan at blokes I fished with who would equate the cost of the outing to each fish they caught.{"Thats a $65.00 snapper"} Man if your even thinking that way give it away

Seems the overwhelming fact is most amateur gold prospectors dont find enough to cover expenses .

Some dont care about what they get and just enjoy getting out in the bush , others except the fact that luck will decide their return & then there are those like me who want to come home richer then they left & will do all they can to make this happen .

Been interesting to read the comments , thank you . :)

Hi Outback
It is quite simple. When you can afford something, you don't care about the cost. It is when the **** hits the fan when you have to think about costs. It will dawn on some of people eventually.

Hello Karl ,

My situation is that being older I'm going to run out of money if I live to long 8.( so have to do all I can to make the gold hunting pay .
Because I was self employed over the years I didn't have any super , just enough cash left over most times to keep going .

Cheers
Outback .

Can think of a few ways to make more for less effort than prospecting....bit like a few future plans I've heard before that are built on the hope of Tattslotto wins, but each to their own. Take the fun out of it trying to turn a dollar i reckon, never lost my cool on the fields, have working more times than i can count. Spoil it for me anyways.

Just hang in there. I am in the same boat but prefer to be self employed not knowing when your day will come and enjoying life rather
than committing my best years in employment with no enjoyment.

One thing I have learnt in life. We all find our own way and no matter if your rich or poor we do have options and we can buy the same
thing one being new or the other option being 2nd hand. There was a story on TV how a guy was quoted $8000 for an 4x4 engine build then
the bill jumped up really high.

I itched my head in disbelief. If you look hard enough you could pickup a 2000 Triton 4x4 dual cab for $5000 and it does not guzzle as much
in fuel. Hard to get but you can still find them.

In my opinion its not how much you earn its what you do with it.

I hope that large 10kg nugget comes your way where you spend 7 hours trying to pry it from its position which
can help you out be in a better position - ;)

Good luck to you and others reading and may the gold find its way to you.

I am a day prospector and each outing costs me about $45 in fuel plus $10 on a nice pie and small bottle of coke I buy
from the first general store I come across in Creswick when heading back out to Melbourne.

For me its about being out in the bush so in effect its a $45 ticket to enjoy the peace and serenity of what the Bush brings.

To kill some time its when I do some prospecting. Gear i have about $$3800 worth with me.
