Just out of curiosity dwt, can you disconnect the coil, turn it on, and post the front and back settings you last used in the test mate. 5000 should scream on a .8 gram bit.

Cheers Wal.

g'day wal here are the settings: front>search mode general
>soil timings special (have also teted in normal and enhance)
>coli/rx mono
>ground balance fixed
: rear>backlight 2
>vol limit 18
>GB type gen
>special smooth
>man tune 110
>motion slow
>RX gain 10-16 (varied)
>audio nrm
>audio tone 50
>stabilizer 11
>signal 12
>target vol 10
>response nrm
>tracking med
>iron reject off

Smooth is one of the least aggressive timings and will give less of a signal than fine gold. But you still should be picking a 0.8g no worries.
PM me if your out this way and want me to take a look. We can test it next to mine with different battery/coil etc.

I'd be swapping coils to see if that's your problem, then try a different battery in case your booster is not coming on if using headphones
there was a recall on some of the 11mono coils that came out with the 5000, check the minelab website for serial no's to see if your coil is in the range recalled.

p.s with the username dwt you might get some post's that don't sound friendly, don't take it to heart, it will be because that name "dwt" has been tarnished in the prospecting world in the past.
regards tm

thanks for that tm..intresting about the tarnished "dwt" name...i will say however i am in no way or have ever been affiliated with any other "dwt" think i might chuck a post on "hello im a newbie" site just to clear up any concerns...... thanks a lot mate greatly appreciated :D

Try these settings mate,

Front: Deep, Special, Mono, Fixed.

Rear: Vol Limit 18, ...GB Gen,...Special Fine,..Man tune 110,..Deep,..Motion Med,..RX Gain 12,..Audio Boost,..Audio tone 50,..Stabilizer 9,..Sig 18,..Target vol 12,..Resp Nrm,..Tracking Slow,..Iron Reject Off,.. Thresh hold...just audible. Make sure you are Ground balanced.

If the .8 doesn't scream at you with the standard 11" mono the machine came with, send it back as there's something wrong with it.

Cheers Wal.

hi ya wal
just as a side note, do you realise the 'deep' on the front is just somewhere to store your deep settings?
it's deep in the back that makes a difference.
if you put all those settings you listed in general on the front and the same settings in deep on the front the machine would be the same in both settings.
deep/general/custom are simply somewhere to store different settings for different ground so you don't need to fiddle in the back when going from deep ground to shallow ground, you can just flick one switch and your already to go for that ground.

regards tm

That's correct tm, mines always in deep and i never run anything else....hence leave the front panel in deep,( can run it in general if you like). Still has the same result.

Cheers Wal

no worry's wal
I'm the same, the deep nuggy's get my attention and the shallow stuff will pop up anyway.
regards tm

Got it in one mate....don't even run Special Fine much either these days. Just trying to get a reasonable setting for that .8 grammer, but sounds like the machine may have a problem. Can't have a faulty 5000 in our midst. ;)

Cheers Wal.

Always run my 5k in special, gain around 9 or 11 stabilizer 6 or 7 and in tracking. Picking up bits 0.07gm at 3 - 4 inches and the 4000is much the same but a slower swing to hear it.
5k is running a NF 14" open mono and the 4K is running 7x9 mono.
Send it back to ML for a look.

thanks for pointing that out but i am still saying what the ?

my Minelab training day amounted to diddly squat so my machine is still a deep dark secret black box to me , i am relying on using settings "donated" by members here

hi ya heads up
what I was saying is you can put the front in "deep" then set up the back (gain, stabiliser etc) to the settings that's best for where you detect.
then you can put the front in "general" and put your settings on the back to suit all round detecting,
the same for custom, (some set the back up for pin pointing in custom"

after you have done that the detector will save those settings for each of the three spots.

while detecting if you go from deep ground on to some very shallow ground, instead of changing any settings in the back, you can just flick the front from deep to general and the settings in the back will automaticly go to where you set them for general detecting.
it is just a way to save your preferred settings for different ground so you don't have to fiddle in the back screen everytime the ground changes.

hope this helps ya mate

awesome thankyou

what actually saves the new settings in to memory ?

is it just the action of turning off the machine that saves " last configuration" in to memory ?

so in theory could i create settings while in Deep mode for an 11 inch mono , turn off the machine to save the settings , then turn it back on and do the same with a 6 inch coil in Fine setting so when i change coils i only have to flick that switch to either of two spots , then ground balance and swing away ??

i dont think i have sorted out settings for the 11 inch DD yet in case people have any special tweaks

much appreciated TM

yeah mate
but no need to turn your machine off between saving the settings, what you would need to do is,

put in deep on the front and put your desired settings in the back for the 11 inch
then
flick the front to general and put your desired settings in the back for the 6 inch
and if you have another coil
flick the front to custom and put the settings in the back for your third coil.
the machine will automaticly save all settings when you change from one setting to another and when you turn it off at the end of day.

if you want to set each one (deep, general, custom) for different coils you can but I like to set each one up for different ground,
you could have one for hot ground, one for mild ground and one for chasing small gold in bedrock cracks.

Thanks , sorry I am slow picking this up

It reminds me of learning to "self teach " myself how to play guitar , I never did pick that up and really the GPX puts out slightly better music .

It will probably just click in to place eventually and become more intuitive

Try a different coil....I had a problem with 17x11 NF. I thought it was very quiet til I realised I could hardly get a signal of my pick head. Nugget Finder swapped the coil for a new one no problems and all is good in the world.

had a crack on the weekend with some stock coils, still no joy on the 1.1grm had the goldguru(mr 2100 owner) and i think it might be the booster in the battery which begs the question.................

..........................................can i charge the battery in the ute while im driving......................i know not start the ute while its plugged in ..............
...........or should i be charging it on accs only????? 8.( 8)

yeah mate you can charge the battery while driving.
as for the booster in the battery, the speaker needs to be wired correctly to turn it on, have you got access to another speaker to test? (the booster does not turn on with headphones)
regards tm

thanks for the heads up tm, usually ive only ever used headphones, (spewin) 8.(
i still have the speaker and booster that came with the unit when i purchased the 5 (rooster booster), and another speaker not sure of the brand.
So in a nutshell im guessing there's no point double boosting something so out the door with the rooster booster,
the battery booster only comes into play if im using a speaker and not headphones (that blows) :|
is there any way to test if the battery booster is working other than taping a small piece of gold to a plastic ruler and doing depth checks?
and is there a system out there that can utilise headphones with the battery booster

thanks for all the help guys kinda guessing im owing a few beers when i get this sorted :8

So the detector is fine with headphones but not right with a speaker? I've heard of probs with the battery booster dying and still working fine with headphones. If the booster is dead then you probably won't get much of a signal from the speaker, I'm not sure on this or how a dead booster would sound but it could be the case.

The booster is I think only there to supply the speaker with the correct level to operate. It's not an audio booster enhancer.
