I am posting this message with a heavy heart.
On frequent trips to various central victorian gold fields with a friend led to a large amount WTF :mad, i am CURRENTLY swinging a gpx 5000 with a nf 12"mono, my friend swings a 2100 with a coiltek 14"dd................the amount of gold the 2100 has hit is to put it bluntly "outright fricking amazing" yet the 5000 is YET to pop its Au cherry.I have scores of lead and some very impressive shotgun pellet finds at some very impressive depths, but the gold is not to be found.......ENTER TEST PHASE 1........ my friend pulled a 0.8gram piece from some old workings a week ago so we went out to that location to see if more was to be had,the 0.8 piece was placed inside a small plastic bottle and layed on some noisy ground and the test begun.....the 2100 was producing a CLEAR signal roughly 4-5" above the bottle, however the 5000 made no signal at all,we then moved to some quiet ground and repeated the test the exact result was had the 5000 still would not locate the gold.We then removed the 0.8 piece and placed it directly on the 2100 coil to a booming sound but alas.... a whisper quiet 5000 was all that was to be heard, some quick swings over the top of rubbish told us that the 5000 was turned on and then the 0.8 piece placed back over the coil with some tuning on the 5000 led to a very faint signal that was EXTREMELY difficult to hear.
TEST PHASE 2.....My mighty 1.1gram piece... (that was gained form my previous detector a gp3000 running a 24x12 coil) was placed over the 12"mono and recieved a signal at no greater then 2-2.5" above the coil..............REALLY.........WTF........I have spent up to 4 hours running different settings including all of the factory presets still to no joy.
I then proceeded to explain all of this to my darling wife...who... in her great wisdom sat there...looked at me as if i was speaking in a language from a second solar system, stood up gave me a hug and said "honey...... tell someone who gives a s#@t " and then walked of to tend her horses.
So i did.........and i have.
cheers fellow prospectors.......dwt out!

For your darling wife to say that, she must not be too worried about you spending 6 grand + for something that's not working, usually these things tend to get them a little upset :D
:) Mick
PS: Don't know what is wrong with the defector either, sorry

how is it with a different coil, say the factory 11"?
yes well now that will undoubtly be now my next attempt, some testing when i first purchased the detector proved that the 11"mono penertrated deeper than the 11"dd(not by much) but was more difficult to stabilize, i have also been under the opinion that if you cant sell something then give it away for free, imagine my surprise to open the box of my new 5000 to find 2 coils packed in with the detector...honestly mate i havnt used the factory coils except for some inital testing while i waited the arrival of my nf coils. The nf coils work extremly well having found lead shot from surface and up to 6" deep...but proof is proof..im just wondering how much gold ive actually swung strait over.....
Thanks for your reply dude i shall give it a crack though....cheers.

As Ben says check it with a different coil to rule that out. If no difference I would be returning to the place of purchase or Minelab. I assume it would still be under warranty? Explain what's happening & get it checked.
From experience checking a very faint target found with my SD2200D the response from a known working GPX5000 was much clearer & louder. The target ended up being a small 0.26gram & some may have missed it or dismissed it with the SD but there was no mistake with the GPX so you no doubt have an issue there.
Unfortunately not the first GPX5000 I have known to have issues but Minelabs back up service is excellent. Shouldn't take more thsn a couple of weeks to get it sorted.

cool... thanks mate thats handy to know

It is a genuine GPX5000 right? Definitely not functioning right if your mate is getting better signals with the 2100. Your 5000 should make up for lost time once you have it looked over/repaired.

I have a couple of 5000s and know them back to front mate, come for a detect out at Ararat and I can check it out for you.

Just out of curiosity dwt, can you disconnect the coil, turn it on, and post the front and back settings you last used in the test mate. 5000 should scream on a .8 gram bit.

Cheers Wal.

g'day wal here are the settings: front>search mode general
>soil timings special (have also teted in normal and enhance)
>coli/rx mono
>ground balance fixed
: rear>backlight 2
>vol limit 18
>GB type gen
>special smooth
>man tune 110
>motion slow
>RX gain 10-16 (varied)
>audio nrm
>audio tone 50
>stabilizer 11
>signal 12
>target vol 10
>response nrm
>tracking med
>iron reject off

I'd be swapping coils to see if that's your problem, then try a different battery in case your booster is not coming on if using headphones
there was a recall on some of the 11mono coils that came out with the 5000, check the minelab website for serial no's to see if your coil is in the range recalled.

p.s with the username dwt you might get some post's that don't sound friendly, don't take it to heart, it will be because that name "dwt" has been tarnished in the prospecting world in the past.
regards tm

hi dwt
have you tried switching smooth to fine gold also lift your signal to 19 main tune to about 90 -100 if you switch to fine gold from smooth you should get a far better result also run audio in deep from all the prospectors ive talked to they have told me run everything in deep
cheers mick

Try these settings mate,

Front: Deep, Special, Mono, Fixed.

Rear: Vol Limit 18, ...GB Gen,...Special Fine,..Man tune 110,..Deep,..Motion Med,..RX Gain 12,..Audio Boost,..Audio tone 50,..Stabilizer 9,..Sig 18,..Target vol 12,..Resp Nrm,..Tracking Slow,..Iron Reject Off,.. Thresh hold...just audible. Make sure you are Ground balanced.

If the .8 doesn't scream at you with the standard 11" mono the machine came with, send it back as there's something wrong with it.

Cheers Wal.
