Why is it so hard to just pick a spot and go? You would think with all the resources available to us these days like google earth, Geomap, Tengraph online and all the other mining and prospecting apps it would be easy. It just seams to make it harder to pick a spot and go.

Picking a spot and hooking in is the easiest thing in the world, but probably also the least productive.

The thing is to pick the spot that maximises your chances - and that goes for detecting as well as for wet gold prospecting!

I reckon research and experience is the key, and the most successful prospectors probably spend more time researching than on the ground.

That said, years of experience make it more likely that you can sum up a prospective spot quickly and decide whether it is worth a go or not.

It does take years of experience, though.

You're right about that! Even when I get there I'm second guessing myself and thinking that because it looks like such a great spot everyone else would have thought the same and cleaned it out before. But if it doesn't really look like a great spot maybe that's cos it isn't?

Sounds like your spoiled for choice :D , if get shallow old lead shot on good looking dirt i work it hard , if only larger junk or modern trash keep walking , if zero signals start running
Driving back and forth is a bigger waste than digging trash , read the dirt , read the trash , read the other detectirists scratchings , its all a big puzzle , setting yourself time blocks in a area or sub areas in the area will help make choices.
Sit back and havea snack usually helps visualise your next few plots :Y:

Think outside the square works for me and use a street directory ( no batteries needed) and mark all the spots in the book Sit in front of the tv at night going through the pages and working out your plan By the way a street directory IS a book incase everyone has forgotten

I just love looking at my old Parish Maps and more importantly, smelling them. It's not a fetish, but I get the same pleasure from grabbing one of my old note books on past trips.
Research, research, and more research. Just as the Doc. said. Golden advice.

You summed it up well mate.Exactly the same for me,something always gets in the way.

Think every bloke should have 3 spots making the choice simple. Old ground that has produced, old ground you haven't found anything on, and new ground you've researched.
If times short go closer. If times not the enemy go further, or to new.

I have a map with all the places I'd like to go, I just try and fit it in whenever I'm close. If it's wet I'll put a pan in, dry, detector.

Any time on the ground finds you more gold than time spent at home. At least that's what I've found. Same for coin shooting for me.

Know where ya coming from shaker,so much area in wa its hard to make a decision sometimes,im allways researching bits and pieces and ive forgotten quite a few areas weve thought would be worth a look, terrible problem.... :)
