Let me toss a cat among the pigeons.....
The commander 10x5 DD is smaller than all the others being only 2.5" wide when used in mono mode, and it will retain some of the DDs ability to tame hot ground. On the right ground, it will outperform both a DD coil and Monoloop of same/similar size. You can also run the gain higher due to its ability to tame the ground better than the equivalent mono. Its also open to all the timings available on the GPX range for mix & matching different ground types. Having the ability to switch between DD and mono, you could go as far as using the Disc feature for shallow target discrimination...at your own risk.

The elite is unreal on small stuff however the 8" is considerably better on the real small stuff. I found a piece on the weekend just gone that barely makes a sound when I run it over the elite scraping the coil. The 8" just sees the real small stuff at greater depth and gives a brighter response.

If your chasing big stuff only don't even bother with a small coil. The elite or nf 17x13 would be a perfect all rounder.

Ahh my mistake. I misread your last post. The 8" mops up the small stuff as does the Sadie I'm sure. Will be interesting to see if any small new coils (flat windings) come out in the near future.

Anyone compared an 8" commander and a 12x7" nugget finder?

I've never been a fan of the real ellipticals, too many weird hot spots on the coil, but I have loved semi-ellipticals like the 15x12" commander. I've always thought the 12x7" was like the Commander's smaller brother.

I wonder why so many people shun the Commander coils.
the 11" and 15x12 mono's are fantastic coils.

The 12x7 eats the 8"round for sensitivity...possibly due to the elips having more windings than the equivalent round. Iv always been an elip man due to this fact...and for the reason that, whatever the elips depth capabilities......they tend to have a stronger field to that depth.....and the slightly elongated cone. Less gain is needed when the coil is doing much of the work.....in all cases, sensitivity rules.

I agree with narrawa. I go to my 12x7 any day over the 8". Not to say there is anything wrong with the 8" but I believe the 12 x 7 punches an inch or two deeper on the same size nuggets. I also believe the 12x7 handles ground noise and emi a lot betters than the 8.

My 6" goldstalker didnt false at all, it was like the SDC coil. It had a slight advantage over the 8" on specimens and rough bits on the 4500, but the 8" Commander on the 5000 was even better again in Fine Gold, that's the only reason I got rid of it.

The 14" elite pretty much matches the 8" commander so imagine what a smaller version would do! Also 12" nf evo is rumoured to be coming soon - that should also be a good coil.
Coiltek are going to start on the next production size of the Elite range very soon too. What that size is ?? Could be smaller - could be bigger?
p.s I reckon it'll be smaller :D

Hi all
Thanks for all your input.
I've just bought the Minelab Commander 8".
I have the Commander 15x12 mono which came with the 4500 for the larger nuggets and now the 8" for small. Think I have most situations covered for now. Cheers Dig'n-it :)
