Which model metal detector should I chose to compliment my Walbanker.

Hi all

I am kicking around the idea of having a metal detector to assist with my walbanker diggings in rivers and creeks.
While removing gravels from gutters and crevices in creeks and rivers, due to dirty water I often wonder whether I should be heading to the left or right of a trench wall, or if I have actually missed a pocket or crack containing gold on bedrock that I am digging.
What I would like to know is what would be a good detector to check whether there is a nugget on the side walls or on the bedrock. The models that I have considered so far are, Garrett AT Gold, Garrett ATX or Minelab SDC 2300. I like the idea of a target ID on the AT gold and its small gold capabilities, however I would appreciate the increased depth on the walls of the other two. The detector would be used in freshwater only and in river gravels.
I would like to hear some opinions from others who have experience detecting in creeks or rivers (or use one with their Walbanker/highbanker). I also am open to any other underwater models they think would suit my purpose.
All responses are appreciated.

Regards

BG

Hi BG,

As long as the coils you are using are water proof i.e. potted resin coils then you should be able to use any PI detector for Gold, it doesn't have to be an underwater one unless you are doing some diving also.

Cheers,

Grant

Either the Goldbug II or the Whites GMT, because you need to track the fine stuff, The GMT has a meter and will show you the ground readings which helps when you are following the Black sand, Good Luck,

John

I agree with ridge runner.the GMT is the only detector I believed that will locate where the black sand has settled and is designed to plot out you digging patterns/ line to best attack the gold.the user manual/ DVD has a whole section on this and I think if you Google search or you tube it you should be able to see it in action eather on the manual or someone else's home video.I took my GMT over to new Zealand 3 weeks ago purely for the same reason.unfortunately no gold in my pan but some of the biggest granulized black sand I've ever seen.I was 400kms from nearest gold finds but I think if I spent a little more time there I would have found colour.not a lot of searching ever went on where I was, if any.

Cheers for the responses guys, I dig a lot of river gravels most times at waist height or deeper once I get into my holes. If I slipped or fell on rocks I would like the protection of the control box being waterproof if it was accidently dunked. The GMT control box isn't waterproof is it? Is there a cover you can buy for it?

No its not waterproof. The coils are.
You can buy cover/s but these only offer protection from light rain/showers not really a good soaking.
