hey guys just a question if you find a ring at the beach or some jewellry and it has no initials or name on it .do you usually sell it to help finance your metal detecting hobby or do you keep the item ?.

Hi thaitran. A good topic. If a piece of jewelry is easily identifiable then you should make an effort to return it to it's owner. There is such a thing as theft by finding. You can hand any finds to the police, get a receipt. If not claimed in 90 days it is yours. May vary in other states.
Here are a few similar topics.

but then there is the problem of corrupt police they might steal me treasure and say someone came and claimed it lol .

the trouble i have with handing a ring in if i found one is that the ring would of never been found if it wasnt for the detector and the hard work you have to put into metal detecting and most people would probably already claimed the ring or lost goods on insurance dosnt really make sense to me .i mean what is the point in metal detecting if you cant keep your finds?.

That is why you get a receipt. Realistically unless the ring is engraved or unique it would be pretty hard fir someone to reclaim it. I have only found a couple of silver rings. Still have them.

Do you really think a cop is going to 'steal' your $100 ring after issuing you a receipt, putting his job on the line? Highly unlikely

If either the wife, or I lost our rings, there would be no insurance to cover the loss. Then there is the priceless sentimental value, especially for women. Do what your conscious says I suppose!

BoydWilliam's on the money with what he said, and in any case if the colour of a 2cent piece is corrupt he's probarbly just gunna smack you in the teeth and take your treasure anyway

Depends on what your finds are, if there is chance of finding the owner I'm more than happy for them to get it back. I have found 3 wallets and 4 mobile phones (not all detecting) and I contacted the owners straight away, and they were all ecstatic to get them back and I know so would I. But than again I don't go detecting to become rich I do it for a hobby and the enjoyment it gives me. :)

My friend found an expensive watch at Balmoral Beach , as he left he asked at the kiosk if they had heard of anyone losing one. The lady in the shop told of how she had seen a woman on her hands and knees scraping through the sand looking for one , it was given to her from her deceased husband. Fortunately she had left her phone number which my mate rang , after describing the watch to her the phone line went silent so he started to repeat himself only to realise she was crying and needed a moment to reply. Anyway the end result was she was reunited with the precious watch and he was shouted tea at a very expensive restaurant at Cremorne.
So if the owner can be found , its the nicest outcome :)
