I have recently got access onto private property at tuena when I went out there I found a straight in the creek which is after a 90 degree bend right after the bend the creek bed widens out while walking the bed I noticed piles of ironstone built up behind the bigger rocks, some rocks where in the creek still and some must only get hit while in flood my question is if you were to come across this would you run only the top 6 inches of wash or would you dig down and sample every layer appreciate any help.

Hi troy best advice. .. test pan all layers .. sometimes on surface usually deeper... inside of bends are usually a good place to start.

cheers Tim. :D

While ive had the best luck with the top 1 foot at Tuena and no further, one day ill do better digging deep. If ur on private property the bonus is it hasn't been flogged as much, but prob still flogged. Tuena is very goldy...so ur in with half a chance!

Hi troy, you should hit gold quite easy at tuena, if you have time dig deep and test the layers if not stick to the top 6" where you are seeing the build up of iron stone, I recently worked a layer of rusty looking wash sitting on clay for good results it was fairly deep down though and all the wash on top had gold too just not as much

Test holes, and note the depth. There a few good threads on the forum on testing and reading creeks for gold spots..

Remember the gold is the heaviest thing in the stream, if the ironstone is settling behind the rocks, check there, and around the back edge of he obstructions, look for the obvious crevices and catch area, look for areas where high pressure would change to low pressure, ie the downstream side of large rock bars etc.

Sounds like an exciting spot to start putting into practice a lot of skills. If you can put a couple of pics of the streams etc, you will get more advice on where to look.

Good luck

Cheers, Tone

thanks for the replies, went out there today we done a bunch of test pans from surface to about 10 inches down the gold seemed to disappear if you went any deeper then that. the more I test the more I will find out I suppose got to be better then sitting at home wondering where it is.

This little picker in the wifes hand I got at Tuena the was second test pan, further down the gold stopped dead. Not saying that there's nothing deeper but the "flood gold" seems to be the easiest to recover. Now you just need to find that run/spot/jam where all those little beauties are concentrated. Good luck and take some pics for us to drool over.

Hi Twapster, did you use the F1A4 this trip or just do a bit of test panning.

I know a fella who found a one ounce nugget digging behind a rock bar at Tuena a few years back , it was even close to the camping ground. So you never know whats there really .

test test and test some more :) yes ironstone is a great indicator of a low pressure zone of which gold will fall out.... but what type of gold is in the area? if its more fine gold it will most likely be moved around during high flood so look for areas above where the creek is right now.
