My wife and i might be rolling up our swags next year and moving from Ballarat down to Phillip Island to live.
I've been thinking i'd sell the 2300 and take up panning etc in the creeks to the north and east rather than head back to the GT with the 2300 if that is the case.
But her who must be obeyed suggested keeping the sdc for beach detecting.
My question is do those of you who detect at the beach think i should keep the sdc (and would it be suitable) or should i sell it off and buy something better for the sand that might also be cheaper?
Thanks all :)

I don't beach detect & I love the SDC but I honestly think you'd be better served selling it & buying a good beach detector with discrimination. The SDC would most likely drive you mad after awhile on trashy beach areas. In saying that you would also need to think about how often you might get to the GT over a year & how much you might miss gold detecting - that could increase your return trips too.
Gary Drayton has been very successful with the SDC on the beach though too:

He might have a high tolerance to pain? :p

Yeah, i was thinking there probably was a detector more suitable for the beach. Doubt i'll get back up here to the GT much apart from fishing trips if we move that far away. I would miss the gold but probably just get into panning for gold or gems and throw some pans into my backpack for when i get back into hiking etc in the mountains to the north/east of there.

Jebus! Don't sell the dustbuster Scrounger! That thing belongs in a display case in the Prospectors hall of fame. (If such a thing exists). Also I presume you have a symbiotic relationship with it. It's like a major organ or an extension of yourself. You are 1 with the dustbuster Grasshopper. 8.(
You're crazy man
A major organ hey? No wonder my wife wants me to keep it ;)

I do think if you dont keep it you'll eventually regret it . Moving from the goldfields to Philip island well I just can't my head around that one. Even though its a lovely place and I'm only half an hour from there id much rather be closer to the GT at the moment. I'm sure you'll love the move and the change of pace though.

SCROUNGER,.... if you are gunna pan the creeks why arn't ya gunna scan the hills and ridges ? :/

I'll send you a YouTube video, if I can find it? Of a bloke specking nuggets as big I normally detect in a small river (100-300mm deep) and where you can catch trout just down the road. The Bream, Flatty's, Perch and Bass aren't too far away either. The Bass are on the way to the spot from where you be coming from (just a slight deviation).

A waterproof detector is a MUST. So is a nice 2-6lb Dropshot Loomis ;) :D

Plus, there are the known gold producing areas that are further in. Which I have no idea of the deposit styles. I just know there was gold found there and an SDC is a great detector for sniffing out those tricky pieces :)

I've used the SDC on beaches in parks and mainly in the GT
My op is keep it man, great all rounder
Works great everywhere,
You'll miss it I'm thinking ;)

Good point silver. I need to do more research into the mountainous country to the east of Melbourne regards gold i suppose.

We're looking to move to a slightly milder climate, near water, fishing and mountains and still within an hours drive from the billy lids down around Knox area Bjay.
It's great up here but the last winter we've just had might have put the last nail in the coffin for my wife.

Now you've got me excited Neo. Send it through please mate

Just so you know scrounger, my father and I lived at cowes for 2 years, keedah rd, keedah cottage. Since new tourism came in about 10 years back, the island is not what it once was. I'd be considering this location, but being very tourist based..it may be a plus side with your crafts.

Also, when I take my girls there for xmas, its going to cost me $90 per night for a tent site, UNPOWERED. Dads house was a holiday house we rented out and that was very useful

I know some great areas around the island :)

The tourism dollars for my artwork, and the surfing (which i do badly  ) are another two reasons we are considering it mate. I can't move back into the burbs of Melbourne, it would kill my soul i reckon. I don't mind the tourists during the season, i can always drive into the hills and get away from them or get out in my kayak, and they do bring in the dollars, and my 'fish art' would probably sell well down there.
I might have to be in touch regards the 'no gold' areas if i move ;)
