What is this?!

Hi guys,

Hoping to pick your knowledgeable brains in attempt to find out what this is, its origin and potentially how old it is!?

I was out searching for gold in some diggings out Bendigo way and dug this up - about 40mm down, its quite heavy for its size.
I assume it was completely gold plated once upon a time, but after being underground for so long a lot of it has flaked off.

It is 10mm tall and the diameter of the base is about the same.

Any ideas what this is? My first guess is a pendant of some sort, or maybe an earring?
Any information is greatly appreciated!

Possibly military/naval as it looks like a rope knot which would make sense if it is.
