My name is Geoff... and my wife (Elle) of 30 something years, and I, are heading to Darwin mid to late next week to visit our 2 kids, partners, and the eldest daughter's daughter...our first and only (so far!) Grandchild...for 2 glorious weeks!

When we get there, there will be heaps of fishing, some more fishing, and then we are going fishing, and we may even end up at a spot called Four Mile, which is a bit south of Darwin, for a few days where were probably gonna fish for something different to do  Elle LOVES fishing, and yes, we are taking the 2 Hobie Outbacks on the roof racks, but will NOT be taking them off anywhere north of Katherine NT

I let her convince me, after many denials on my behalf :8 , to buy myself a Minelab GPX5000, and am still in the stages of putting the round white thingy on the end, wrapping the tv antenna around the black broomstick, and plugging it into a blue box that reminds me of an old radio box from the 60's with dials and switchy things that have words like Threshold, and Disc. (something I think I slipped a while ago) and other stuff that I think I heard about on a Harry Potter movie. At least I apparently also have some cool black headphones that I can listen to Led Zep, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, oh...and Neil Diamond and Neil Sedaka...NOT. Probably more happy listening to Grinspoon et al these days, but I do call it quits at Gangnam Style

We are leaving the home port of Bundaberg and taking about a week to get to Darwin, after stopping at places like Bedford Weir, Lloyd Jones Weir, Longreach Waters (Lake Woods NT) etc. (fishing!) and after the obligatory 2 weeks of child minding, both young and old :p we are taking the next 2 weeks to get back so are looking for some likely places we can stop at and do something different than damn fishing  We've got the Warrego area of the NT planned, and coming back through places like Clermont, but does anyone have any other places that we might try and get this blue beast making attractive noises, apart from the baby crying that Elle thinks all the You Tube videos make the 5000 sound like?

Newbie?? How did you guess?? But even at 57 I still feel like a sponge when it comes to doing something different and new, so any help and advice would be much appreciated. Hope to put some photos, videos, reports and stuff back into the forum before, during, and after this trip.

Thanks All...Geoff

Welcome Geoff , great intro & there are many of us in the same age range as yourself , so you are not alone. We have a few guys on the forum from NQ & NT , so they may be able to lead you in the right direction. Cheers Paul

First thing i recommend is go to the 2 dollar shop and get one of those little plastic fly swatters to take with you in case you decide to take the hobie out in Croc infested waters - i was told by a local thats all you need to keep the crocs away :8

( not )

seriously ,download and install google earth on your computer or I-device then go to this link below and import the data for the areas you're going to

https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=11

That will give you a starting point , just understand that they might show only half the places where gold has ever been discovered , its up to you to discover the other half and then report back to me discreetly ;)

Watch as many youtube videos as you can on " using the GPX 5000 " , and maybe spend $ 80 to get the DVD guide if you didnt get it when you bought the detector , then practice in the backyard or local bush a couple of times to get a feel for it and practice what you learnt from the videos. ( bury a bit of the wifes gold jewellery for a guide too - it might encourage the little gold spirits inside the detector to find more of the same)

enjoy . and good luck

Welcome to the forum Geoff, sounds like an epic journey you're about to undertake. Don't forget to pack those fishing rods.

You've given yourself the best possible chance on a few nuggets with that 5000. Stick to the factory presets whilst studying that manual, which will confuse you for a short time. Good thing to read while your waiting for those fish to bite.

There's a few great guys on the forum who have their finger on the pulse with whats happening in the territory. With a bit of luck you may be able to get a quick lesson on how to power up the blue beast and make sure the flying saucer is not connected to the wrong end of the stick.

Hope the forum sheds some clear direction to your research and look forward to reading how the adventure unfolds....Best of luck mate

Cheers Wal.

Aww com'on Headsup, after 10 years in Gove in a past life, even I know that you don't hit them with a fly swatter! The locals up there swear by poking the buggers in the eye while they are coming at you...apparently it does them no end of harm. We lived at a place called Wallaby Beach, and Elle used to love going for her morning constitution along the beach until the day she realised that the big trough in the sand heading towards the water was NOT a turtle track. She decided to go bush that trip and was really happy to be walking through the scrub on what was obviously a well worn walking track, until the moment the big grey rib fillet on the hoof decided to see who was stomp stomp stomping done HIS track. She never walked that way again....stuck to the bitumen from then on if memory serves me correct.

Watching videos as we speak...

Thanks Paul and Nic103 for the welcome!

Thanks Wal! Hopefully some of the NT guys and girls can throw some hints this way...don't need any secret squirrel spots...just some handy hints will be great.

Cheers
Geoff

scary stuff . i hear you.

nature has its hazards out there for the unwary

poke em in the eye if you have to but i suggest using a 45 calibre finger

You're doing exactly what i wish i could do , but the business slowdown and alimoany wont allow that until lotto man knocks on the door or a 10 kg nugget jumps out of the ground and lands in my pocket.

You probably worked extremely hard to get to this point in life , so give yourself a pat on the back for what you and Elle have achieved . get out there and open some new doors to fun , sun and good times.

enjoy.

G'day Bill, thanks for the welcome and offer. I've since requested to join the FB page for Prospecting in the Territory, and it seems a good bunch of people exist there. If you are around towards late July, we'd love to catch up as we have plans to visit a place called Mad Micks Hut (??) apparently out the Warrego road way...is that correct? We've budgeted at least 2 or 3 days for the Tennant Creek area.

After reading the FB page we might try and catch up with a couple of the Darwinites as well as it sounds like there is plenty of places around there.

My battery is full this morning!! Now I just have to work out a way to get some of the bling off Elle to start practising telling one end of this thing from the other...I politely asked her last night if I could borrow some of her bling to carry out Headsup's idea, and she not so politely told me to go somewhere else 8.(

Welcome Geoff and Elle, hope the ringing in your ears is not from standing too close to the speaker boxes back in the day! but the sweet sound of nuggets on the way to your collection bottle. Have a good trip north, you will be hooked by the end.. You have been warned ;)

Wish I could program the GPX to play Iron Maiden when it
finds a target. Welcome aboard.

great idea

mention it to minelab ?

can we get to choose between the sound of applause , cash register sound , brass bells or " woohoo baby "

:D

or maybe "Eureka...I have found it!" ?

Thanks Ten Ounce Tone and Heatho!

Took the blue beast out the front paddock today, and after Elle telling me where to go last night when I tried to borrow the bling, I decided to use my own wedding ring. Put it down in the grass and set up what I thought was correct settings to start with, and proceeded to find my first ever ring pull :D

Then I found another one!

and then a nut...

and another ring pull...

a cane train railway spike almost took the eardrums out...

and then after after about 45 minutes I finally found my ring again 8.(

Lots of videos to watch yet I am thinking :/

Welcome Geof and Elle, Great intro and looking forward to updates. Research research research is all I can advise you to do as I am a virgin hunter who has yet to explore the world of fossicking but hope to get out there one day to find that nugget with my name on it. Good luck hunting ...Cheers Debra and Daryl
