Water Containers, Bungs and Taps

When you shop for or you have the following type of container; I didn't know this....nor did my mate who uses the same, so I thought I would share it....
The bung or the tap can be stored under the fill cap.
I was storing either fitting in a separate container to swap out as required but either can be kept virtually in situ.
(To my mind this makes the unit complete, so why do you pay for the tap separately in most cases?)

Yes, NJ. When you buy the drum (with cap and bung), the purchase of a tap is usually separate and another cost.
I didn't realise the bung and tap can be affixed and kept interchangeably under the cap.

It is a new idea , only in the last few years . I got a couple of 20 lt. containers from behind the cafe . One had been used for vinigar and the other washing up liquid . Saved them from going to land fill .... For the last 30 years I have been using 3 - 5 lt. containers . They look like small jerry cans . They had hydroflolric acid in them . I work in a lab , the chemist said it would be O.K. if you washed them out well . 20 lts . of water is 20 kg . better to use 10 lt . containers . Smaller containers are easier to pack .

The square type containers are harder to carry over a distance . Use a jerry can type .

You have to hold the square ones off your legs .......

Recently bought a bloody expensive plastic Jerry can for water; FrontRunner brand. Really liked the recessed tap in the base as it’s much less likely to get broken off while bumping around in the back of the loaded Ute on corrugated roads, so I figured the extra cost was worth it. Unfortunately, I’d had it for a few weeks before I tried laying it down while full - only to find the damned lid leaks like sieve. Lid seems ok and the o ring is still in place.

Contacted FrontRunner and despite their much vaunted warranty, they’re not interested, simply because I didn’t keep my receipts from when I bought it (who keeps receipts for a plastic Jerry can for more than a day or two?). The retailer basically says the same - they want proof I bought it there, and simply tell me to talk to the manufacture.

Dunno what the answer is apart from caveat emptor, but it’s the last time I’ll pay nearly $100 for a big plastic bottle.

I don't think I have ever had one that I could lie on its side when full. I found that putting gladwrap under the lid sometimes helps.

I had a square one out in the bush . The top cracked up after a few months . It had water in it . Keep them out of the sun .

You’re correct. It was more that I’d laid it on its side so I could drag it out of the back of the ute. The days of me picking up 20kg at arms reach are well & truly over.

Might be worth a read, if the product is clearly marked Frontrunner im not sure you would need a warranty, it should be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty or by Australian Consumer Law

Spare wheel on a 4x4 (mud tyres AT) about 28 kg. Dont get a puncture that requires changing wheels then (although I suspect that you will find you are suddenly stronger than you thought). My 52 kg wife can do it at 71....

My pretty little modern ute, has a fancy looking roll-bar, which combined with the fancy-nancy load-lid I’ve got on it, means accessing stuff that’s up against the front of the tub is a pain in the butt. Trying to lift and drag a full Jerry at arms-length, while standing next to it isn’t easy, so I typically just choose to drag stuff out rather than trying to lift it (In fact I’ve got a nice 2m metal rod with a loop one end, and a plastic covered hook on the other, for doing exactly that).
I’m an old fart, but I wouldn’t be going bush if I couldn’t change wheels (and tyres if it comes to that). Like the story of the old bull and the young bull, these days I try and work smarter, not harder.

I bought a few of the dark green Jerry can shaped ones from Bunnings. I don't use the tap because they are only ever spare water or perhaps used for panning. One of them is sitting out there on the truck now laying down in the sun and bulging a bit from the heat but the only one that ever leaked got punctured in the trailer rollover.

I too will do anything I can to prevent lifting anything too heavy. All my new fuel cans are 10L but I won't buy them from Bunnings next time. I've found the Willow brand a much better container.
