Just about done with the man part of the sluice. Just have to sort the ally pipe for the legs to go through and cut the bread crate now.

The orange electrical conduit is great for the legs - if you want to convert to a gem/gold combo, they are essential to allow the occasional rocking to help settle the gems lower in the riffles. My advice whatever legs you put on - put some sort of stoppers on the end. Open pipe/conduit can just sink into the ground while you are using it and upset your levels.

Cool piece of gold getting equipment !
It is hard to find Miners Moss mat in our country, but I think a PVC Coil mat would do the trick to some extent.
Other than that it is easy to do project by DIY'ers , cheap material from junk yard, coupled with this excellent build instructions and video, and off ya go !

Thanks Wal for this nice and working build.

The "miner's moss" in the Walbanker is just the cheap "spaghetti" mat you find at bunnings/reject shop/aldi as door mats - I recall reading at some stage on this forum that someone had used both and preferred the "no-name " version.

G'ay Wal and folks,

galvanised steel air conditioning ducting scrap for the rear of hopper.

Ross

Thanks for posting your build info and pics !
I have a medium sized pile of that material like yours, the old type , strong and sturdy if I bent a piece of it , it will stay like that for as long as is unless I bend it again. Of course the galvanization coat will just be scored clean after a few runs, but that is OK; any rust would occur will be washed away. The outer coat will remain longer I believe than the inner coat. Not a biggie . I was lucky to get that pile of that galvanised steel air conditioning ducting scrap in auction several years ago, any sluice build just take some and build ! But for bigger sluices/HBs you will need a good stand as the bottom tends to bend a little bit.

I use the awl banker Bunnings mat and bread crate at the bottom and the expanded mesh at middle nothing at top all my gold get cought in the expanded mesh nothing in the bread crate and mat it works well keeped doing test pans of stuff coming out at the bottom nothing and some test pans to make sure I'm still putting pay dirt in the sluice it works well if you stick to the diamensions that wal has provided

Very thank you indeed. Yub, that's the type of mat I am referring to, the "spaghetti" one. Different names same thing :)
I have this type, mostly they are on door steps as floor mat. Like the pictures bellow . It is backed though.

Appreciate it, thanks. Now I am going to find some bread crate, since they are imported they are hard to find locally. But the expanded metal I can source locally.

That mat will work perfectly fine Geo. Only some flour gold will get down to that section. ;)

Cheers Wal.

Thanks Wal. Any gold that gets stuck inside the weave and try not to come out -after flushing it by strong spray of water- a hard beat on the back of the mat , sure will do the job. I found it shreds easily , but it can be had for cheap so no prob, just stock more of it just in case.

Got my custom box delivered from Adelaide today, bought almost everything I need, apart from the bread basket, which I need to suss out my local bakeries next delivery time and the expanded mesh.

As for the mesh, tried a few places (stores, scrap metal yard, local building site) with no luck. Is there anyone on here willing to sell me some 500L x 300W?

So, apart from the two above items I should have it close to completed this Sunday, can't wait.

I rarely use unbacked mats. With the backed mats just roll it up mat to outside and backing to the inside and work it in a 20l bucket allowing the fold to run back and forth and empty out the mat.
A pic would be better but 99.9% will come out and the mats will last and last without needing to be too gentle.

Don't know BIGJON, how much is a 500x300 piece worth mate?

Paying for freight is no problem.

I am talking about the expanded mesh for gold only, is that what you think you may have?

Well take your sheet size, minus what you have used, divide the remaining size by the size I want, then use that number to divide what you paid for it and that will give you a rough price mate.

Hi Geo,

As far as scorning of the gal is concerned, I've used my Wakbanker a dozen times in the last 1.5 years and there is no sign of scorning whatsoever however, I only used gal sheet on the back plate of the hopper as I did not have further access to ally to complete. Rest of unit is made up of ally which includes box and hopper sides.

Where I have cut gal with grinder shows no signs of rust as I filed it down after cutting. I'm sure if I hammered this unit every weekend or at least a few times a month then the gal might start to scorn. In saying that the rear of hopper receives little use or impact from gravels unless I am overloading with 2 - 3 shovels full.

As far as I know gal is self healing in small scratches and chips are concerned, with large chips and gouges then rust sets in if the coating is stripped obviously. I could be wrong though?

Love my Walbanker!

Regards,

Ross

Steel fabrication joint - the one I dropped in to specialised in trailers and had the perfect sized galvanised offcut leaning up against the wall for $20.

All good mate, BIGJON has helped me out with some.

Cheers anyway.
