I've got a pair (Aldi ones for around $29.00) that are rechargeable(cheapest like that that I could find, Old mate and I are always in sight of each other out in the field anyway so we don't use them at all.

Not a lot but I always have them with me , I use Motorola xts5000r models they are standard uhf , encrypted digital and P25 capable which also allows me to listen in on all emergency service GRN and have proven very useful in fire emergencys re road closures and other situations as well all in all they get used a bit , and every small town always has a UHF channel to report fires , or if need be in a true emergency you can key it up

The Wife and I have a pair of Digitech waterproof/floating 3 Watt units good for 10 kms. They only get used if we intend on moving out of sight with each other, which is rare :)
Great Radios :D

I have a 3 watt Uniden hand held.
We use them for com's when we go shooting on foot.
We all have earphones and extension mics so we don't spook the game.
They get out OK 4-5km on the flat ground out west.

Would anyone know why I can't pick up police and the rfs talking on there walkie talkies? When using my walkie talkie?
The emergency services changed a few years ago, so that people could not scan their channels.
It is a good idea if you have a handheld cb to take it out in case if of an emergency, but it does not cover all situations.
Best to tell someone where you are going and don't drift too far away from that position. Or if your plans change let someone local know of your intentions.

Peter.

Because they use VHF, cheap walkie talkies are UHF and can't tune to the frequencies required. Better units allow RX on selected VHF frequencies and so can be tuned to local emergency services.

Many metro emergency services are on digital VHF now and it is encrypted.

You won't pick up any GRN ie police ambos fire brigade rfs etc on just any old handheld you need a Apco p25 capable unit
And even then the police recieve will only be out west North and South etc you can't get the sydney basin or surrounds due to encryption and it is not easily tapped into and over the air re keying makes sure you won't hear it for long if you do
And if your in the lower blue mountains listening to Ch 3 you are listening to VMG3 located in razorback
It's known as the truckies choice as it's the best repeater in Sydney hands down , and has some very charming
Characters to say the least , but it's coverage is very widespread and has all sorts of riff raff on it

I have 2 of these.

These things are friggin awesome for the money , uhf-vhf , 100+ programable channels , rechargeable , built in torch and built in fm radio all for about 45 bucks each. Bit tricky to programe but i do it via my PC now so its easy . I have the 40cb channels , marine channels for when im boating and also RFS channels . You can load rural police frequencies as well if needed.

Edit... cancel the police frequency bit.. I just checked with my brother in the bush and they are just changed the poloce radio set up. Even so every thing else it does is great , lol u can even pick up the International Space Station if its broadcasting while overhead :)

We have 2 Garmin Rino's = https://www.ja-gps.com.au/Garmin/rino-650-gps-uhf-radio/

Combo GPS & 5 watt UHF Transceiver
Unit-to-unit Text Messages
can see and poll the other unit.
Great bit of kit.
On board battery will last 3 to 5 days.

I am a fan of Garmin and have several of their GPS's, and these units appear to have great functions, but that price. Yikes, and you need 2 of them.

My Mrs insists that I take the walkie talkie every time I leave her at the car or base camp when I'm out by myself. (the damn have a 15k line of site range)

Not bad to have when she tells me it's time for tucker but the bloody thing is always flat when she's insistent I return so we can head home. ;)

I just happen to go and have a gander at Johnny Appleseed's site to do some research on GPS units one night and they had a 24hr special, got the 2 units for the price of one.
Very happy chappy I was.

Always have one in my car/bag, in case I get in trouble when I'm out the back of nowhere on my own. With some of the bush bashing I've been doing lately, I'm looking at investing in a unit with a greater range, and possibly a PLB.

I have a programmable VHF - UHF unit I carry.
Has all of the marine emergency, UHF Repeater, any thing that can be used if necessary in an emergency.
I use it as a test unit with my work.
