I dont believe government can continue to preach the green line without introducing can and bottle recycling, it has been a success in SA for over 30 years.

More than 30 years, I remember in primary school grade 5 when I would return bottles to the Deli at lunchtime to get refunds and then buy firecrackers
with the money for cracker night.
57 now so it has been around at least 50 years, maybe not in its current form, but certainly for glass bottles then.

5c for small bottles and 10c for 1litre bottles.
I would walk back into school with $2 worth of crackers in my bag.

It was a bugger lugging all those bottles around to the Deli for a few days to save up the $2, but worth it on cracker night.

:)

Edit:

Found this in the article -

Victoria last to get on board
In 1977, South Australia set up the first container deposit scheme in Australia, followed by the Northern Territory in 2012, NSW in 2017 and the ACT and Queensland in 2018.
Both Western Australia and Tasmania have also now committed to schemes, leaving Victoria the last state to announce plans to introduce one.

Berts/Shelly's softdrinks in Caringbah NSW had their own bottles and supplied all the sports fields in the "Shire". It was great money for kids.
From what I see from return and earn most kids couldn't be bothered and you see grandparents at the machine putting in the cans "the money is for the kids".
The lazy little sods are too well off nowadays and should be doing it themselves.

The good old returnable glass bottles ,where did we go wrong ,look what the kids today miss out on ,take the bottle back to the local store and swap for :money: or lollies

No more corner Deli's now, all done in by the big boys in fast food and Servo's.

Personally I would rather have the Double cut beef cheese salad roll freshly made, than a whopper.

:/

Well that I think could be addressed with a firm parental lesson or two, in-front of the Grandparents, and some organisation with Grandparents behind the kids backs.
Mine do it at as part of being responsible to the family and community.

Besides, they dont do it, they dont share in it. (yes even Kato)

Our Kindy fee's dont exist because we put in a hour or so each weekend at the Kindy, tidying up and gardening.
ALL the family does the work, no one is without a job to do, even miss 4yrs.
They all went there and there is a sense of pride in the task.

Then we head out to the park and have some fun.

:)

Return and Earn is great,we have collected close to $1000 in cans and bottles in the last couple of years.Got about $70 or $80 in the shed ready to be cashed in at the moment.I have a bin in the staff room at work for bottles and collect a few milk crates full during my work week as well.I even have a milk crate hanging on the fence so my neighbour can donate to the cause. :money: :money: :money:

The downside of bottle recycling is that like here in NSW when they introduced it the price on average went up 19 cents a bottle of which you get back 10 cents and the rest is for running the scam scheme.

I saw on one of those large tv sets that are in all government office waiting areas an advert telling me I can "Return and Earn", left me a bit perplexed when I was still 9 cents out of pocket.
