I was aware as well, but felt it highly unlikely it was one :)

One thing to look for was how the forgery was made. This is a good way for any future reference on coins as you collect.

So look was the number changed from a different Florin - Easiest way

Was it done by electro plating

Was it done by ...

You get the idea. Look forward to the answer. There was a case I read about some old timer that counterfeited a lot of coins. They found and charged him, I think they had no reeding on the edge and the were pretty bad copies. However they did make it into circulation and are somewhat of a collectors piece now.

Always a story, that's what makes collecting interesting.

According to the "Australian Coin & Banknote Pocket Guide" 2011 18th Edition a footnote specify's the following;

Key To Mints: The 1937 pattern florin was struck at the Royal Mint, London.
Coin with 'S' mintmark were struck at the San Francisco Mint, USA. All other
issues were produced at the Melbourne Mint and do not have a mintmark.

It is noted as a Pattern release with a Uniface (reverse) and a proof version is valued @ $265,000 with no values listed for any condition less than Proof.

Hope this helps...perhaps more investigation is required???? (this in response to westaus, you'd need to see the reverse to tell for sure but there were some struck based on Greg McDonald's guide).
