I've got a few days off over the Easter period but the wife is working so I'm hoping to get out for a day trip or possibly an overnighter to do a bit of a recon trip into the gold fields looking at access, camping and for when my TDI SL is in my possession in a few weeks time.

Q. Is it worth taking the MXT Pro along for a detect??
I've often read that the VLF's are no good in hot ground and I'm new to the central Vic gold fields, I've got a few Dough Stone and John Tully maps and will probably pick up some more before I go.
The closer to Ballarat or Castlemaine the better if it's a day trip as I'll be coming from S/E suburbs of Melb.

Q. Are there any general areas that would be less hot than others and better suited for the MXT Pro to run, I've got the 12" concentric and 10x6" Eclipes DD coils.

As I said, I'm just itching to get out searching for future reference but would like to spend a few hours detecting too if I get the chance, not expecting to find gold but happy to clock up some hrs getting to know this machine better.

Any suggestions appreciated, even if it's one that I'll be wasting my time taking the VLF.

I wouldn't say its a waste of time, seek out the trashy spots in and around the gold fields and put the VLF to work. Use the 10x5' coil and the Relic mode on the MXT. Just keep the gain in check on the mineralization.

G'day Pete, If you want to try the MXT's Prospecting mode start of with it at the Pre set Value's on the Gain and the VSAT And Ground balance the Machine first But do the GB at a lower gain setting and check it before to turn it up to the pre set on the Gain, and if it suffers from threshold loss when you sweep the Coil, then Up the VSAT By ONE NUMBER and reduce the Gain By ONE NUMBER and Keep doing this until the Threshold Stays without going Quiet, Every time you reduce it by one number Test it out, IF it is Extreme Ground then Use the VSAT in the Hyper Sat Range and Lower the Gain to between 6 or even 4.

As Narrawa Said, Use the 5 X 9 (6X10) Eclipse Coil as it is a Double D and will handle the hot ground better, other than that use those Relic Setting that I gave you Before, Ok.

Good Luck, , John

Thanks for the repies Narrawa and John, I'm looking forward to actually getting out for a swing at last instead of sitting here researching until I can.
John, I have all those settings you gave printed in the detector bag and will refer to them as I need them, you've been a big help mate.

Pete, Don't Forget In the Relic Mode In Gold Country Turn the DISC (duel control) from 2.8-2.9 DOWN TO 1.8-1.9 because some Nugget have Iron Staining on Them and you will Also wipe out the Pickers, Ok

Good Luck,, John

PS, In the Prospect mode dig All Targets or scrape the Ground with all Targets that give an IRON Probability of 75% and If it Goes up Then For get it, If It goes down then Dig It, Ok.
