we catch them in baffle creek up here mackka , mainly in the summer months they are also known as short finned pike
as dave said watch the fingers they are toothy critters

we would usually catch them at the mouth of south creek while throwing poppers for whiting
the biggest i have caught up here would have been 30cm
Thanks SS. I know Baffel Creek as a past client of mine has /had a property on it and he was growing avocados etc.. He also said it had mub crabs in it but not sure if that is true. Cheers Mackka

I've caught them at Port Macquarie Grumpy, only small ones as you said, 30-40cm, but I'm surprised you get them that far up, my mates in Northern New South Wales call spotted mackerel snook, evidently everyone up there does.

good old baffle creek mackka still no dams or wiers on it
plenty of mud crabs in all the feeder creeks on the baffle mackka ,leave the pot in overnight and a good feed was there for breakfast

they may not have been the same snook as you get dave but they call them snook/ short finned pike either way mate you could loose a finger quick smart if not carefull

we only caught the odd one in jan/feb dave ,we never ate them they were bloody magic bait for the mangrove jack
take a slab off the side and drift it into the mangroves at the bottom of the tide ,the jack could not resist them

same with the big winter whiting (march only) a bit in size like the king george dave
2 or three inches below the elbow when holding them by the pectoral fin
the problem was we had to use 25lb line as a minimum as the 60 to 80 cm barred trumpeter (javalin )fish always ran with them creating a very tasty by catch
