They consider detectorists treasure hunters, who steal the history, without recording it, sharing it, and often seek to profit from it. Its an interesting debate, I can appreciate both sides of the argument.

Very interesting. 70k is no joke, the sad part for me is they really lost a great shot at finding something amazing, less depth more holes.
Great share mate thoroughly enjoyed it.
Edit. I often thought about the shipwrecks around our coastlines in much the same way, I can see both sides but a whole bunch of history on the bottom of a sea floor doesn't really do much for anyone.

Exactly the points raised. I see both sides too.

i know a pair of archaeologists and even they have said to me how much they dont like detectorists and told me how i should stop detecting cause we dont know what we are doing and ruin sites, they have both been all over the world digging up our finds stuffing up our detecting

I see a few big differences they get paid to dig and miss most of the surface finds ripping the first few feet with an excavator and we pay to dig and barely scratch the surface, they sit back and wait for finds in between their projects and we go out and make the finds more often. If they were as determined as we are at finding stuff they would have found it first, if it wasn't for people like us it may never have been found and just buried under new developments. Guaranteed rewards would help the cause on both sides. Right or wrong I wouldn't tell a soul where i found what unless it was an alien artifact or something that would re-write history not what is already known

This is a Time Team special about a viking hoard found by 2 detectorists and what followed.

It seems detectorists and archeaology do not go well together.

The trouble with Time Team is they always portray detectorists in a bad light through clever editing, When Detectorist have invited them to dig certain sites they have turned on the detectorists and the shows always have a sting in the Tail, Even to the point that they cover the ground with washers to mess up the fields so the detectorists can't detect there any longer Even though it was the detectorists who invited them there, They have thrown Gold coins worth $50,000 in to the piles of soil and if it had not been for the detectorists going over the heaps they would never of found it, Time team causes more trouble for Detectorist than any other person's known, yet I know for a fact that they had one Guy who use to work for them who use to Raid the sites at night (night hawkering) and they never even knew it and it was one of their team but us normal detectorists got the Blame, and the Fact Is I know this person Personally,

The Actual Arkie who was dumping washers around the place and who was the biggest problem was professor mick aston and he got others to do it as well, but they made a big mistake by filming them selves doing it and got in to trouble for it, he died on the 24th of june 2013, He is the old guy with the white hair and the crazy sweaters.
