patchfinder said:I agree with 1 out of 100 targets, I only don't understand these people that post on facebook, they go out for couple of hours and come back with a dozen of nuggets, it is just me to be unlucky or these people are full of sh....t.
After watching a popular Aussie gold show, I managed to identify the exact location of one particularly successful dig (down to the exact tree etc). I visited said place, that was no more than 200 meters from their permanent wash/work site - though still in the bush. Was a perfect place to "plant" some find. The place had obviously been hammered over the years but everyone seemed to miss a handful of huge $$$ nuggets.
Was very entertaining viewing, but sadly this was the only "team" that seemed to have all the luck continuously. This isn't to say that there isn't stuff there that was missed, but more likely to be smaller than those portrayed. I was working an area nearby last week and heard them come across my UHF radio from the worksite - easily identifiable, and had to chuckle. By the way, I found zero gold, dug one or two iron scrap, and viewed many rusty cans that appeared to be suspiciously spread around certain areas.
I've heard of people detecting for years not finding any gold and others finding it from day one - a perfect example was my wife, day 1 (first time ever), SDC2300, not even 30 seconds in (after set-up) and bingo, a quarter gram. We scoured high and low in that area for two more days and ZERO.
Also, I had a theory that all these places I was going that seemed to look like the local tip were going to be fruitless. Then I was a particularly popular YouTube digger walking through a car park area in the bush with all sorts of junk around him. He does a live dig as usual and out pops a grain of gold. Surely hundreds of people had walked over that particular spot, some may even have detected it - but there was gold there.....
I like the 15-25 inch range coil and probably miss many a small target, but will one-day land that slightly bigger one. I also dig less targets. My wife digs heaps of targets in the same area. Horses for courses and good advice on previous posts. I'm a convert, I used to be "where is all that gold", now I'm "yay, I found an old nail" and "wow look at that wildlife" and "what a beautiful bush walk I am having - lol".
P.S. Last week the wife almost stood on a snake at Tarnagulla, she took a photo as it slithered away but I was unable to positively identify it. Snake season is upon us!
