Hi there. I quit in December 1999. I was not only sick of the stuff but was getting ready for my 2nd marriage and didn't want to die too early. She (Carolyn) still is 15yrs younger than me and smoked as well.
About 5 yrs later after smokin' out the back on the deck and outside at restaurants she gave it up cold turkey.
I used patches for 3 mths, played a lot of golf and found the patches slipping off in the Qld. sun. Therefore i stopped putting them on till i returned from the 19 th hole. I ended up forgetting to even put them on then and gave up totally.
I have also given up drinking ----i hope.
Cheers ;)

Hey Smithy Congratulations, Well Done!!!
I gave up smoking 3rd March 1999 at 10.15am after seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist. I had the hairs on my tongue (yep plenty of lines there I know) harden and he said did I smoke? he brought out a photo book of cancers of the tongue and mouth, I almost crapped myself on the spot. He told me that he spends every Tuesday in hospitals cutting peoples tongues out and taking a muscle from the shoulder to fill the cavity.
That was enough for me, down to the chemist for some patches. Used them for three weeks never touched one since.

I didn't realise how bad my breath, clothes, hair etc,etc must have smelt because I can smell a smoker a mile away these days.
I also put on weight but after a while you just stop stuffin your face and buy chewy.
That's mine how it helps someone to give up and start livin.

I quit maybe 6-7 or 8 years ago (it may be 6 +2 or so )
I have forgot now .
40+) see I forget I was 50 +
I started when I was under 10 years old, after 35 years or so smoking never tried to give up (40+ smokes @ day ) I made a plan I'll get me some patches, puffers, and last night I smoked my 40th or more for that day, stuck a patch on and sat with smokers every day since (now no smokers in my area)

My summery off what I did felt .
1) many years after I still feel like I should light up ( gone in 2 sec :) and less often but it still comes.
2)I think you need to be shore its time to quit ( I was waking up every am sucking for breath) now no colds/flu linger for less time
3)Get a puffer there good for that peek time when you light up (don't worry about the patch+puffer I used it and I was shore it run out and I as puffing air last thing I used for 6 weeks)
4)I did the patch 3 months in 6 weeks skipped the weekends and just left them on :)
5) this worked 1st few weeks went camping alone a week and no shop within 200km , lost my puffer and all was good .

All this smoke talk I feel like one :)

Edit seems I forget I was over 50 :8

Good to here your getting support mate. Won't be long and you will be back to your good old self.
Take care and talk to you soon.

I've been on a ecig for the past 5 months, I will admit though I have imported a bottle of nicotine so as I can mix my own liquids for vaping. A cigarette now tastes bloody awful and I'm saving a heap of money from being a pack a day smoker. Sinus feels a lot clearer food tastes a lot better..probably to good actually.. yeah and Mr Hockey can take his tax and shove it.. lol

Sorry to here of your illness Smithy, never ignore your closets friends they are great help.

ecigs are good, I just find it easier to light up. My mate gave the esigs ago and has been clean for 2 years. I have too and they do work, I just have to get my priorities right at the moment im spending elsewhere.
I should stock up on e-juice before Tony starts controlling it...

Smithy, you beat the hardest part mate, hang in there, you'll do it!
