Thanks,I dabbled in blacksmithing when I was a teenager.
So have an idea about the basics.

Learnt a lot of lessons with that first knife though.
Have a a long way to go and better tools to save up for.

Finished another tonight...except I need to sharpen it.
Used some old black leather as a liner in the handle and epoxied the crap out of it then just to be sure I peened the pins to make it nice and strong.
Wood is from an old dinner table leg.

Great knife. My father was a carpenter/joiner and when he sharpened his chisels he wouldn't be happy until he could shave the hair off his forearms. He did the kitchen knives as well and my mother used to take them outside and blunt them on the concrete because they were too dangerous to use in the kitchen.

What sort of steel did you use LC.

5160 leaf spring steel.

Good choice. Another nice carbon steel is 01 tool steel, most old solid chainsaw bars are 01 and they are cheap or free.
Just anneal at non magnetic, shape blade, heat again to non magnetic, cold oil quench edge first, clean and chuck in the missus's oven flat out for half an hour, you know the rest and bobs your uncle.

Well they're for different purposes so it depends what I'm using it for, although some double up. But mostly rabbits, foxes, deer and fish.

Ok see how I go?
1 machete (Bowie)
2 heavy fillet
3 lighter fillet
1 hand made boning
2 general purpose
1 skinning
2 ?
1 folding skinning
2 folding GPs
2 fancy skinning
What do you use them for?

Pretty close. The one you had as hand made boning is made by Dewey knives, it's their fox skinner model. The next 3 (from R to L) are for deer, 2 Winchesters and a Joker. The 2 ? ones are both Buck Knives, I think 102 woodsman and 118 Personal, for skinning and general. 3 folders, general and small game. Fancy skinning- one's a Rigid and the other's an Elk Ridge, both copies of the Schrade sharpfinger I think, for skinning. The 2 with stag antler handles are made by Joker Knives, the folder's a Collie I think and the other's a Pantera, both pretty good quality knives. The Winchester knives in the middle are pretty good value. I do a fair bit of fishing and hunting, I used to skin foxes to sell the skins and tanned some for myself, have had a few deer heads mounted and cut them up for meat, stuff like that.
