I use a multi meter a lot as I am always messing about with coils and cables and 12v wiring, also I have also used it as stated above to check to see if a specie nugget has gold all the way through it or not, it is a very useful tool for many applications and I feel a must have piece of kit to keep in the car for checking batteries and doing minor electrical repairs when in the bush.
Another thing that might be of use to you and certainly if you have any interest in detecting for coins and relics is the Minelab PRO-ALLOY gold tester, I believe they are no longer in production but you could possibly get a second hand one online form ebay.
