I am looking to set myself up so I can commence gold detecting. I live in the Latrobe Valley area and would appreciate any advice on what equipment I require to start out. ie what type of detector etc. as well as likely areas in the state. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The decision on the detector depends on how much money u have . But the sdc 2300 is proberly the easy one to learn on for under $4000 .
Most of the expensive ones take ages to learn to use correctly . I have been detecting for many years and usually it takes a long time to find
gold till u get used to a new one . The sdc found first bit of gold in less than a hour (found 6 pieces on the day )

Good idea is to do a day training course with one of the reputable detectorists.. Minersden coiltek etc
Or go to one of the forum meets in Vic..such as the one at Laanecoorie next weekend.
Meet some of the forum members and have a chat and maybe we will take you for a detect as well ;)

The new gold monster from mine lab looks like it will find gold ..I think around $1k..would be ok If you only had a swing once or twice a year ..I don't think any other brands besides Minelab are worth $&@?/..The Blue hover vac(2300) are a great machine for a more serious operator..and is capable of finding a lot of shallow small and big gold..The Minelab 4500 and 5000 will cover more ground with the availability to put large coils on..and punch deaper..A lot of guys have both..Best of luck it's a great passion..

Hey easy 181 I'm not too far from the valley but do all my detecting in the GT . Have heard of some gold detected in the region but very few and far between . I would have to say to have a good chance at detecting gold you'll have to go with a 2300 or a 4500,5000 . To me a gold monster is still a bit new and seems to work well in some areas but not others.
