Hi every one just came back from the USA and seen there a heap of the rivers running though Victoria keen to go out and use my sluice.
question is I have miners moss that I got from the US and wondering is it worth replacing the standard carpet in the sluice with the miners moss or just use the standard till its worn out then replace it??

Thanks guys
Ben

If it's any help I had carpet in my sluce and after cleaning it well I placed it on the table outside (black glass) a couple of days later put it back in the sluce box. I looked on the table and saw about 20 small flakes on the table. I think I could get more out of it still. This is the reason the old timers burnt their hessian mats when they were worn out. I havent burnt my mat YET! Miners moss is beter for an easy cleanup. Ken.

Carpet is a pain, it holds alot of your fines until you let it dry and one day you will need to burn it off and pan the ashes to get your real fine gold. personally id choose backed miners moss over carpet any day.

For best gold retention i use green carpet on bottom with miners moss on top then and expanded screen on top of miners to keep it from pukering up

How does the dream matt compare?

No comparison mate, dream mat is engineered for gold processing, it will capture micron gold that you cant see until you have enough of it in the pan.

Dream mat is a standalone system nothing on top its as is simple fluid dynamics not replying on the crash principle. its proven cyclonic concentration. Its not porous so you don't have to wait for your gold, you dunk it in water and its clean.

it wouldn't be fair to compare them, if you had to put a number on it for gold suitability if carpet was a 3/100 open weave backed miners moss would be a 60/100 and dream mat would be a 100.

look at the pepper in this pan down the right side its microscopic

How does it do on coarser gold? I managed to produce a riffle set that'd let a 22 bullet right over the top but had no problem catching dust when i was experimenting with my sluice build (10 mm flat bar at a 60 degree angle 15mm spacing, sluice was at 4 degrees slope and just enough water to clear the riffles) and I know the reverse applies so I'd love to know if it's as good on coarser stuff, I might even buy some if it is.

There is a reason professional miners and serious prospectors use miners its the best gold trap. Cells have a tendancy to block up with pyrites and garnets plus your limited to the amount of material able to be fed threw.
