Went out detecting with the GPX 5000 on Thursday and got a faint signal in a mullock heap adjacent to an old shaft. Dug down about 5" and the target was out. It appeared to be just another of those pesky hot rocks which abound on the field, apparently just iron impregnated sandstone.
Passing it over the coil it sounded just a bit too sweet for your average hot rock, so I cracked it in half with the pick. One half had no effect when waved over the coil.
Different story with the other piece however. It gave a very sweet sounding signal and turning it over revealed the unmistakable gleam of gold.
Back home, I soaked my " hot rock " in hot water for a while then carefully picked away the sandstone. Inside was a nice little 0.4gm nugget
