Spent a week up at Dell's Hole over the Easter break, it was a great experience overall and learnt a lot for future trips from everything to camp setup to reading different ground and some different detecting styles and settings.

There's a lot of interesting ground up there but you need to know how to read it and spend a good amount of time with the coil on the ground (and climb many hills). As such you'd be crazy not to do a day with Steve from Savannah Gold as he does the tours up that way and gives you all the tools and local knowledge you need to piece it all together yourself and find some gold.

Just about everyone finds gold a few days after a session with Steve and true to form on the 3rd day (and about 15 minutes after a phone call to Steve at the top of a hill) I picked up my first. A few more pieces came after that along with some other interruptions (resupplying at Georgetown and some rainy days) so only 3 pieces total for the trip but happy nonetheless.

Looks like a great trip, have driven past the area a couple of times without stopping. I have now committed 'a must stop for a couple of days' into my must-do list.

Did you think of dry panning that crevice the nugget came out of in the 4th last photo?

Thanks for the inspiration.

No worries Wally69, I did have that thought however when I revisited the spot I left the pan in the car and it wasn't exactly a short walk back.

The spot where the 3rd piece came from I think would actually be better to pan, I could have sworn a bit came off as I cleaned off the dirt however couldn't find it for the life of me. I'll go with pans prepared next time :)

Definitely a great spot but need to know how to read the place as it's a bit different country to other places I've been so spending some time with Steve is the way to go.

Some nice finds there. Is there locations suitable for panning/sluicing in the Georgetown area? Or is it only suitable for detecting? I have a Gulf trip planned for the end of June, start of July but don't own a detector.

Yeah, you have to keep an eye out for those car-eating cattle!

Cheers

Gerard

nice nice nice...I like the look of that ground to mate

Hey SirDigs
Well done mate glad you had a bit of success, like you said "Local Knowledge" is an absolute must in that country & the "Gold God" know his stuff.
The photo after the 1st nugget, looks like you dug out right on a reef line? is that right? what size coil are you using? did you swap to a smaller coil? that would be my plan for the next run there as you will pick up a few more, great job & some nice pics.

GWT
Mate there is some good "Gold" to be got by the humble pan mate all around this district, good luck.

Lee

Looks like a great trip mate, very nice scenery and a fantastic find. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks Lee,

That rock it was next to / resting on wasn't gold bearing. The nugget was standing straight up so is probably why it was missed previously as it was faint at first. I took off that chunk of rock only because I thought the target was underneath / in it but it was just resting on it, so basically I didn't actually need to crack off the chunk. From what I understand a multi-ounce piece was found less than 30 metres away.

It was found with a NF 14", I worked the surrounding hill pretty extensively with that and an 8x6 Sadie on various settings but didn't find anything further, same with the other pieces. May be worth a look again but there's plenty of other spots I didn't get a chance to check out as well :)
