Underneath that National Park are huge reserves of Gold and other minerals.
Not meaning to start a fight but notice how the greens are apposed to the
construction of this 2nd phase of Hydro Power. ?

Talbingo has been a pumped Hydro station for a long time.

These plans were written into the National Parks plan of management when it
was created.

But they now have to try and destabilize any progress.

Yes, we had a good conversation about this. :Y:

Sure is a beautiful part of the world :Y: would be a great pity for this project to not go ahead it's a clear Win Win. I'll definitely be visiting this part of the country again and making sure our kids and grandchildren know of this project and its potential should the fight drag on  pretty sure they'll love just as much as I do once I'm done teaching them :)

Absolutely.

An almost completely hidden hydro power network that when
completed will generate 10% of the country's power needs.

What more could you want in these days.

I would love to go through the tailings from the excavation.
Probably the main reason why it is dumped in the park some where. :goldnugget:

What a great a great and timely thread. 70th anniversary of the Snowy project start this weekend.
Wish I had been able to attend but the body couldn"t stand a trip to Cooma. I worked on the Island Bend Dam and tunnel, Worked for Utah Construction and Mining for several years. Went to NZ when Island Bend finished and worked on the Manapouri power station and the tail race tunnel to Doubtful Sound. Never saw any signs of gold at Island Bend but would love to get access to the camp sites with the coin machine, can"t find any trace of the camps on Google Earth.
Where did the years go, 86 now but still "Doing it in the dirt with Minelab"

When they put the tube through from Thredbo to Perisher,
High security measures had to be put in place as the workers were
found to be carting out huge amounts of gold.

All the tailings were then dumped down at Long Point thereafter.
On National Parks Ground,.

They actually missed the main reef just a bit more east.

Funny That...

I look across lake Jindi up the snowy to IB from my place. The old town is now mostly camping area. Is it true about the red light area at the Guthega end of the airstrip?

As a kid I remember dad driving us through Old Jindabyne, over the bridge and up to the new town site; Back then you could drive on the work roads. We used to drive the car into Tumut 1 power station, 1 km underground.
They stopped doing tours to Tumut 1 after 911
