Ive been preparing for my annual pilgrimage south to the GT via various gold fields along the way and as usual I have been looking at potential site-seeing opportunities and came across Burning Mountain just off the New England Hwy near Wingen. Apparently a coal seam has been burning and smoking underground for 5500 years and hence the name.

I had a gander at the NPWS website and as per normal, it lists the conditions of use and these are:

PROHIBITED:
1) Pets
2) Smoking

So be warned all you heathen smokers, no lighting up your **** as your passive smoke may endanger the local wildlife!

Smoking has been banned in National Parks and I think State Forests in NSW for awhile now  ....

And won't be too long where it is something that's done behind closed doors....

That picture looks like it came from Blazing Saddles, the scene where they are all sitting around eating Texas Strawberries and farting. Top movie, not allowed to make movies like that any more.

Hey Whisp who needs a movie. Here's a recipe for ya.
Tin of Baked Beans, 3 pork sausages, 1 brown onion thinly sliced, and 2 fried eggs plus coffee or tea to taste.
Add some toast and go for a long , long walk preferably alone     ;) ;)

The coal seam has ceased burning. You can see where it was and kind of looks like quartz reefs that were mined out. I was there a few years ago and the landscape changed where it was exposed to the sulphur from the burning coal?

Let us know if you go up there. Theres a free camp just off the highway at the base of Burning Mountain.

Cheers

I was looking at the free camp site but am a bit concerned that it might be noisy from the highway. I like a peaceful night.

Was up there only a couple months ago and still looks like its still burning the heat coming from the ground was actually pretty hot with a strong smell of sulphar in the air

I was there 6 months ago and you have to walk several kms at least to get to where the current front area is. They say it is moving at about a metre a year, but it seems that it was more than that from when I last visited about 20 years ago, but could be that the distance seemed more with the pacing years.

I would be interested if someone has some reference info regarding it having stopped burning as that will save a future long walk.

According to TripAdvisor it was still burning 4 days ago.

It appears that it isn't that spectacular (as the name suggests) & all you will see at the top or front of the burning is possibly some smoke from vents.
From the NPWS it's about a 4km walk to see it.
