Salt Lake Mining

Hi guys
To my knowledge salt is a mineral,hence why I posted here. I would like to know if harvesting salt from salt laes in Australia is allowed and if so what sort of paper work is involved, is it like a mining lease or what??
thought I would quiz a few brains on this

From what I know removal of material is prohibited, as well as removal of salt derived crystals like halite. There may be some towards the central, but not that I know of. Someone else may be of help

that's what I thought, but there are small salt lakes in NSW that are harvested yearly for food salts, surely there must be an exeption somewhere. thanks thought lets see what others think.

Crystal World has a mining lease in Bolton, Victoria for selenite (gypsum) on one of the lakes.
