Get a range mate if you can. I the half inch on the right for clarification into a bucket and the high wall plastic one for sampling and general panning. The smaller like yours sieves i mainly use for cleanouts these days of to fit in the backpack.

I like the green plastic rimmed ones for classifying larger amounts of paydirt, you can fit almost 3x the amount at a time in the green ones, the green ones are no good for centering gemstones though I do use them for classifying gemstone paydirt into buckets and then use the aluminium ones for centering the stones.

As Golddigg has suggested, sieve to size the area you are working.
If it is fine gold, use a fine sieve, if nuggets are present use a bigger sieve for that area.
I usually use a 1/2' sieve because I do know that a 6 grammer will go thru that no worries and anything above 6 grams wont be to hard to miss when going thru the sieve when checking out for bigger nuggs.

Cheers
Brad..

I have cut L shapes into the bread crate riffle
Will this work any better & not clog up with sand & fine gravel?

I am still going to add an aluminium security door type riffle at the front
I will also try to improve water flow

Eventually i will be modifying the sluice to become a High Banker as well as a sluice

Regards

Hmm those little squares all next to each other will still clog mate. If you want the easy lazy way buy some expanded metal for the whole thing :) otherwise id take the time to cut the crate so theres little tp none squares left as a full square

I have cut more out of the bread crate
I hope that what i have done will work & not get so clogged?

All i need now is the front aluminium riffle & i am in business

Thanks for your advice it is much appreciated

Sieve to suit the area. Personally once my sieve is full i fully submerge it in water bit of side to side favoring one edge and flip it over to inspect whats on the bottom. If done right you should see all your heavies sitting there. Including gems and such.

GD is spot on, use your sieve just as you would looking for gems....if you have never looked for gems...learn how to. Liz has a great vid on this method. Submerge the sieve and shake it up an down so the heavies sink to the bottom of the sieve, shake sideways and then rotate the sieve 90 degrees and repeat the process. Do this a few times then flip the sieve. Gems/Gold & heavies will be nicely centred if done properly. Any gold will be sitting there right on top after flipping.

For you "gold only" prospectors, you may get a nice sapphire surprise, makes me cringe how many gems I threw away in my earlier days before I used this method.
