John's weather channel is forecasting 20--40 year records for cold evenings across much of SE Australia in the next 5 or 6 days...

Let's see what happens, but I have found JWC to be generally more accurate than BOM.

**** SEVERE FROSTS TO IMPACT LARGE PARTS OF AUSTRALIA AS WE HEAD INTO JUNE ****
**** FEEL FREE TO SHARE/TAG THIS MESSAGE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY ****
June to start off with a week of widespread frosts and fogs for more than 50% of the country with central, southern, south eastern and eastern parts severely impacted.
Good evening Winter has truly arrived for large parts of the country with two strong cold fronts in recent days. Cold air lingering from these fronts will be trapped in inversions allowing for extremely cold nights with widespread frosts (some severe) and local fogs through large parts of the country the next week mainly southern, south eastern, eastern and central parts as a massive strong stationary high pressure system sits over Victoria and NSW.
The high will be very strong reaching 1040 hPa later in the week the fact the high is so strong and becomes stationary will introduce these very chilly nights through large parts of the country.
The high will finally move away by Monday allowing a front and low to push up from the Great Australian Bight (A separate write up will follow in the coming days with this system) this system will allow winds to pick up with cloud on the increase meaning the nights will not be as cold.
During this sequence we may see frost/cold night time records of 10-20-30-40 years in some areas especially NSW and Victoria. Many regions will see several nights of sub 0c temps especially inland parts of SA, inland Victoria, inland NSW and parts of southern QLD.

It is due,...i recall when i used to live in the ACT, that usually within 4x weeks beyond Anzac day, you could drag the extra blanket out for a few months... just like clockwork...(even Apr 25 dawn service could be 'frigid' with either fog/frost or both).

Dunno what happens there these days tho.
(my season clock seems to still run to this cycle)

Sounds like a good excuse to tell the Mrs to share body heat, Just tell her it's your survival mode kicking in and you was worried about her well being,

Some times I am so thoughtful, :Y:

John.

Take it easy travelling during evening till the following mid morning, Black Ice will effect some area's if this eventuates. About 10 years ago we had the largest frost I've seen and I'm nearly 50 it was so bad people fell over and broke limbs and that was on the footpath in town. The roads were really dangerous 2 neighbours wrote off their cars lucky for them they escaped without injury of the many accidents some weren't so lucky.

My Mate lived at Mt Mitchell, just East of Glen Innes and it has hit -12 on his front Veranda a few years ago.... Bet he's glad he has moved to the Western side now.... :|
About 3 years ago, Glen had a record Snow Fall and the Town was isolated for 3 Days with 4 feet of snow dropped through-out the whole area... :Y:

And a Mate wants to run a 'New' Gem Fest in the Glen Innes Area on the 2018 Queens Birthday Long Week-end... Who wants to go Fossicking in the Middle of Winter, at Glen Innes, when you have to break through the Ice to find your Gems.... Can't tell some tho..

-5 Forecast for Tonight at Glen ... Winter has arrived Early..

LW...

Looks like good detecting weather to me.
We leave in the morning, back Tuesday.
