Neodymium magnets definently make my detectors run rough , if its surface junk a magnet rake would save a lot of unnecessary targets pre detecting.
I have a large pick and have three Neodymium magnets on the scraping end of the pick and they catch the metal as i rake the hole out, but generally i use a smaller pick and the detectors definently run smoother. In the right situation magnets are great.

Hi Miss Pots,
I'd suggest just have a magnet on your pick and run it over targets after you've dug them rather thank dragging a magnet before you detect

It'll only get the visible surface steel at any rate flowers..... would serve a purpose in a high steely area that overlies a truly great researched site that's gunna give if you can get to it (no Windows) ,.... it's the up down that provides some good exercise within our passivity (I pick up visible rubbish anyway). :D

put something over the magnet, bucket, plastic bag or whatever, easier to get small crud off your magnet.

that's if you're sweeping an area first I mean.

magnet fishing is a thingy.

Carrying it over the shoulder there was almost zero interference on the sdc but at waist height there was warbles.

I seen a rake with a magnet on every tooth once .

That looks like the bees knees aus, are the magnets superglued or screwed on?
Something tells me they may just hold there own when it comes to stickyness

Can't they be knocked off when you hit gravel?

OMG, how embarrassment, lol So you don't leave them on the pick all the time? Haha

These two little beauties next to the half penny have a magnetic pull of 50 kilo's each..... make me feel old n weak  when I try to lift them straight upwards off the tool box lid (ha) :D

Geez they're strong little sucker onerers, thanks silver. I'll get onto some strong magnets.
Now for a night cap or three. Cheers and tomorrow morning I'm out early to do some detecting. :Y: O:)

Magnet fishing is most definitely a thing http://www.magnetfishing.net/

I use a magnet similar to this for detecting https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2Pc...Neodymium-Heavy-Power-Holder/32815338099.html

I keep it attached to a bungee cord mounted on my shoulder.

You can get larger ones, I have two of these https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hot...h-Circular-Rings-For-Salvage/32807013081.html

When working in a rubbishy area with a large amount of iron targets it can speed up your target recovery, but as mentioned above it will only work with ferrous targets. Still a handy and cheap addition to your prospecting kit.

Working junky areas can be tedious and frustrating though so another strategy I use is to dig targets until I loose enthusiasm and then mark the location on my GPS and come back to it later. It's a worthwhile strategy to clear out rubbish, I found a 4g nugget right next to a large piece of flat iron one time. Minelab Gold demonstrates this in some of his YouTube videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWDiy8DSi-o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtIod-JCxd8

You have to be careful with these Neodymium magnets - keep them away from the control box of your detector (it makes my SDC go crazy), mobile phones, credit cards etc. They are fun to play with but when they come together they can shatter and pieces will fly out or you will get blood blisters if you get your fingers pinched.

I've never used magnets but I've used this strategy many times. It pays to clear out the junk, I found a nice nugget under an old rusted can in the Whipstick - never dismiss a spot because you find a big bit of junk.

Dron these links are fantastic, I really didn't know magnet fishing was a thing, it's so fascinating. Just said to hubby 'hey do you know there's a thing called magnet fishing?' He's say ' yeah, course, what planet you from?' Pffft lol. Thanks for the advice about the neodymium magnets and yes the junky areas can become tedious and frustrating, so a magnet pick or rake would be helpful for sure. :Y: :D

Flowerpot, workmate has a great setup with magnets, havent seen it but it makes sense,he has a length of pvc tube capped on the end, then a long bit of dowl with a cuppla good rare earth magnets on it,screwed or glued he said,so inserts dowl to the bottom, walks about picking up rubbish then take it where ya want it,slide dowl back out and, well you know the rest....

Hi mad, I like the idea of a magnet on my pick and running it over targets after digging them. A couple of the areas, I want to detect have lots of visible surface rubbish, one area in our paddock at home has remnants of the original home and so much rubbish, so I reckon I'll set up a 'magnet rake' to clear the bulk of any magnetic junk quickly and I'll call it 'Junkinatorrrrrrrr' and then get on to looking for the goodies.
Going to buy some magnets now.

yeah in that case you might need to rake first.

Where I detect there is bugger all junk, but when I do hit a junk area, I do as Dron does...do a section and leave before I kill something and come back later and repeat.
