I prefer to smoke my jerky. Love the real smoke flavour.I did buy an Aldi dehydrator the other day ($40, plenty left at my local store). It's only a small one but I got it mainly to dry my chillies for chilli salts, powders etc. Haven't used it yet.
Those who want to add a smokey flavour to their jerky there is Liquid smoke available. See pic. Available at Babina for those in Newcastle. Also online. I haven't used any of it yet either but I will at some point.

Nugget, dont know about the jerky, but make lots of watermelon and mango when they are in season, fanbloodytastic, if you have kids they will eat the lot in a sitting.. Pineapple and banana also go well.

The watermelon and mango come out like those roll up things you can buy. The banana will go hard, its all good!

Cheers Tone

Do you marinate the meat with the liquid smoke? The first batch of jerky I used a smokey bourbon sauce which was really nice, the second batch I used wild meat sauce which wasn't too bad either.

Thanks Rod, I just wasn't sure if the liquid smoke was something you put in a container at the bottom of the dehydrator. I have to look at getting some.

I thought it was the stuff that you let out of Circuit Boards.
Where can I get some. I could make a fortune. :D
I made my self a smoker once out of a 9 gallon keg. It worked that well I gave it to my mate when he moved away. 8.(
I will have to make another one.

the one i like is smokey bbq by masterfoods

i ended up getting the same dehydrator from the good guys at $105

I can grab a bottle and send it to ya Nugget? I have been going to try it myself to compare with actual smoked jerky. I reckon that most if not all the steak house type eateries use liquid smoke in their ribs etc. Just doesn't taste right. Plus the time and expense it would take to push through the quantities they sell. Only my opinion.

I appreciate the offer Rod but I might check out the local butchers to see if they have any, otherwise you'll be hearing from me
