Hi guys I'm heading out to try my luck at porters retreat this Monday till Wednesday
I've been to native dog latly and have been happy finding small stuff but going to try for bigger
Ones. Should I treat porters the same as native dog or is it different?
Can anyone point me in the right direction :)

Hi Bigred,
Been a good many years since I was there. Scored a few nice ones down stream from the bridge and quite deep into the creek bed itself. Some nice gold there too. Was very over grown the last time I had a dig there (2005?). The biggest sapphire I've seen from there was a mates of 60ct, specked on top of the hill near the fence. Best of luck and let us know how you go.

Thanks fortune seeker
I shall let you know and hopfully a few nice pics to go with

Hi fortune seeker I went to porters retreat today and didn't have much luck at all I got a few bits of gold but no sapphires I'll put some pics up of the spot I chose.

Hey BIGRED.My Father in law used to regularly visit Porters and said it has been nailed. He used to throw away large party coloured stones because his father in law said they were worthless. They had a large claim at black springs Oberon In the 70s and used to sell sapphires by the matchbox to a distributor that manufactured the needles for record players. He still has some awesome stones he has cut.He said he will take me up to where there old claim was but reckons its now on private property.

At least you got some colour. I tried digging on the hillside and never did any good. I did best in the creek bed. Try and find a deep crevice in the bed rock and follow it either way, sometimes going under the creek bank.

I'm going to try my luck at grabben gullen tomorrow and see how I go.
Dunny that would be awesome! I've got my match boxes ready haha

Campbell river used to be a good producer of deep blue saphs. My father told me long ago that there was a small waterfall and a swamp that guys were getting large stones from back in the early 70's, he actually saw them. I've looked on google earth and can't find what he was referring to and he has now passed so can't pinpoint the actual location. The main fossicking area has been thrashed, some guy took out a claim and worked the banks quite extensively. You can see his report on the DIGS website. Might be still worth a try but walk a couple hundred metres from where you park your car.

The spot you dug at Porters looks like shallow worked ground. Find the junction of retreat and little river where they meet and sink a nice hole there and try and find bedrock. Sort all material that comes out of the hole, a river sluice or high banker would do. Water in the hole is your problem but might be worth the effort.

I can't remember the name of the creek it's next to little creek I was at the junction where I dug my hole so maybe it was Campbells river

Nice drawing. The fossicking area at Sapphire Bend is on the other side of the road but you can try your luck in either direction.

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried having a dig a Porters where I have marked on the map. I have always wanted to go down the river but wasn't sure if it was allowed. It looks very promising
