Hi Joshwasere, I would suggest every prospector should have a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). I am only new to this forum and i am guessing PLB's have come up in many threads over the last couple years.
Considering their long battery life the cost of a PLB works out to be only a gram and half worth of gold per year. very cheap insurance. And while hopefully you will never need to activate your PLB, there is a good chance you may come across someone else hurt in the wilds who needs urgent medical help and you can trigger it for them.
One error in the vid is that there is a few brands that have GPS accuracy down to a 100 metres or so not just the one he mentions.
I have one of the ACR RESQLINK models from ebay. They are smaller then the model in the video and some ebay sellers flogging them throw in a very high quality first aid kit.
If you don't have a PLB, go get one.
(PS some models float, others don't but can come with neoprene cases that will float them)

Or try Whitworths, that's their regular price. I bought one earlier this year and now that I have one, I won't ever need to use it!
Or consider a KTI unit at $257. Designed in Melbourne by an Australian company.

and they are tested to this end by an independent laboratory.

check it's a real emergency and get some idea of who they're looking for and
related medical conditions.
Incidentally; when I'm prospecting or bush walking I hang a pea whistle around
my neck in order to attract attention from searchers if I'm, say, down a
mineshaft, out of their field of vision or simply too exhausted to shout. It'd be
a real devil if they passed by 20m away without knowing you were there
wouldn't it?

HI All , wondering about whether to get a plb instead of the SPOT or Garmin Messaging gps i already have,
I do find the messaging feature on it handy, but is there any other device that could achieve coms with outside world without the cost? i don't mind having to go to car to make that communication...
the messaging service is a bit exy for my usage and relies on having to subscribe for a month each time i want to use (and cannot use the gps without the month being subscribed to.
the garmin is a great device but you need to be out there often enough to get the benefit....

of course the extent of service you require depends on how far from civilisation you venture, but I know of cases where people have been lost in dense bush & the whole time they have only been a couple of km from a well used road.
get the most & best safety gear you can afford to. And include a snake bite kit!

as far as i am concerned you want to live get a plb

GME plb twice the size with a battery 7 year life and they want $200 to put a new battery in the mongrel
