I read in the local paper (The Borderwatch). That an adelaide mob are undertaking exploration for copper zinc silver and gold in the Padthaway area just North of Naracoorte South Australia. Apperently they have had some promising results. They want to do further tests. I was only talking about if there might be gold in that red dirt they have in the Coonwarra nd North. Anybody ever try their luck around the area?

Hi Chewy,

Another local hey? I read that too yesterday.
The company said they have a few targets they want to look at but are unsure of any precious metals, if any they may find. Also they said that the depth of the targets were around 70m deep which is just out of range from my shovel :D
Not sure if the Terra Rossa soil between Penola and Naracoorte would hold any gold, I think it is just weathered down Limestone. There are a few Granitic intrusions around the region though and I would like to know if this has caused any localised mineralisation in those areas. The Granite is supposed to be among the oldest in Australia.

Interesting none the less.

Where are you located? There are not too many of us down this way. We might be able to get a group together next time we head over to the GT.

Cheers

I might be joining you soon, am moving from Adelaide back to the Mount(bye bye beach detecting). ;)

Sounds like just a typical speal from an explorer, purely speculation, most probably trying to raise funds which is a bit of a tall order at the moment. A few companies have drilled out that way without much success, including Normandy Mining back in the 90's.

Hi MJB, I'm in the Mount, live over Conroe way. Sounds great, I'd be up for group trip some time. I'm actually heading over that way for a day or 2 leaving Sunday arvo coming back Tuesday at this stage. Buying a Gpx 5000 tonite actually, the guy im buying it from is on his way over here from Melbourne. I'm going to have to get over there a bit to justify the cash outlay on this beasty. Lol

Hi k man, yeah whats up with that no gold biz. It sux to be us. Lol looking at maps of where gold has been found around Adelaide and the GT, it's amazing that there is that no mans land in between. I always thought that it must be there somewhere just unfound as yet.

Hi Goldpick, did you come from the Mount? Wouldn't it be trippy if we all knew each other and didn't realise becuse of the forum names. Lol So SA prospecting law says if you find gold ya can't sell it. Is that right, or did I miss something? Does everybody just sell it anyway? Kinda stupid law if it is how I read it. Said you can keep for your own collection, but ppl could sell all or part of a collection couldnt they? SA seems really weird compared to everywhere else.

Yes chewy plenty of mining to do down here if you like limestone.but I'm the same as you I have gone over the maps till I'm blue in the face and we just happen to be stuck in no mans land when it comes to gold :( until you hit casterton the geology doesn't change to much dose it.I've gone all over those parts in the sniff of gold for only a few specks.now my rule of thumb is drive east and dont turn off until youve past the grampians to your left gone down the buckshot track and turn at the old burnt stump.

lol...no probs Kman.

So we might end up with myself, Kman, Chewy, Goldpick and new member Sheryl. We are starting to get a few people here. There might be a few group trips getting organised I think.

Yes, originally from the Mount, finished up at Grant High in 1989 and moved to Adelaide with the family, been here ever since.

I don't mind the cold weather, and the fact that you only get around 40 sunny days a year. ;)

Yep I know a few ppl who went to Grant. 89 I reckon we'd be about the same age then. I went to Mount for 1 term then moved down to Port Mac so went to Allendale then. Couldn't wait to move back to the Mount. Lol

Good luck wit the 5K Chewy and hope your trip out rewards you with some nugs.

If we get 40 sunny days a year goldpick I reckon we have used them up already...my yard is the driest its been for a while and I'm still blowing out dusty boogers. We need some rain

Hello fellow locals, I see you guys mentioned me. Yes there is gold over near Dergholm, have seen some specs my brother got out of a creek over there. I wonder whether anyone has tried around Baileys Rocks? Might have to go suss that out one day. I have 2 sisters and a brother who all live in the Mount and are detector mad. I have just found my first pre decimal coins and was so excited I did the happy dance.... One was a 1913 half penny, others still soaking to get the gunge off.
Sheryl

I've done a bit of detecting around Naracoorte , but just at old stations . Found lots of interesting old things plus few old coins including English pennies , I come from Kingston , but travelling around , settling in Townsville for few years now . good luck finding gold down there.
