Hi folks, I'll be taking my family up to the Oberon area soon and wanted to know which area is the best for beginners to find gemstones?
I want their experience to be fun with something at the end to show for it :) so which area is the best for beginners?
Any thoughts?

Bruce

Sapphire Bend, no guarantees on finding stones but most who go there seem to get a few. They are generally small but good quality and colour. There are never any guarantees when fossicking, it all boils down to luck on the day and how keen you are to dig and process dirt.

Thanks heatho
Does anyone have any maps, tip, hints, etc. For saphire bend. I'd be happy if we find zircons or even quartz. Just so the kids have something to show for the weekend.
Remember beginers here :)

Some good info in this link here Moose.

Here's a map showing the public area and the diggings along Sapphire Bend Rd, if you want to stray out of the public area you will need a State Forest fossicking permit.

Thanks for that Heatho, I'll do some more searches as to how to go about it at Sapphire bend.
I'm hoping I can find a bit about how to find the gravel bed that has the gems in it and how to know where to look what to take, etc, etc, etc :)
Thanks again

Thanks Heatho have a mate that lives in black springs and was gonna go for a bush walk in a couple of weeks to see what was around.
