Had he day in nundle panning today. Tried a few different spots up and down he peel for 2 tiny flakes all day. The river is very very dry and I think it's been pretty well worked over. Not much gold where in looking anyway

Yeh, you hear stories of oldies digging to the layers. He said she said in my opinion.

Plenty of other precious stones around though up that way.

According to legends, Nundle needs some dumping down rain to replenish stocks in the river bed - there was scuttlebut 40 odd years ago that the gold came from half way up the drop off at hanging rock and was transported down the rock face to a small creek/swampy area, where it confluenced with the peel river at bowling alley point. That explained the difference in character of gold below and above bowling alley point

The Peel has always been good to me though...

A lot of the creek is closed off to fosicking, so that leaves only the well used areas along the creek still open to fossicking where you can still find a small amount of very fine flood gold in places. Last time we were there 6 weeks back, we tried out the river sluice over two days and came home with less then half a gram of flyspeck gold.
As mangoman wrote the whole area needs a good amount of rain to flood the creek and hopefully redeposit the gold from where ever it is leaching down from the surounding hills and gullies.
