I learned in the late 80's from this study how fast different size gold will drop in a stream/column of water. It sure opened my eyes as to what it does in a pan or sluice.
Since then I have not worried so much about Losing Fine Gold. It takes just a little longer to get the Fines to drop through a Fluid Bed, but not much.
I got a KICK out of how they described making the individual particles of gold. It must have taken Hours under the microscope to pick them out!!!

Use an XP gold pan as it has a snake skin section for very fine gold, when you think you have every thing out of the black sand, start tapping the top of the pan above the snake skin and you will see the extremely fine gold climb up the snake skin and stick to it , then just getter the sniffer bottle and collect
