JJust returned from a weekend at Nundle.
We left Saturday morning at 2am planning to arrive early and set up camp then spend the day panning the creek.
Unfortunately I had a tire blow out on the trailer about 10 ks from Singleton and spent the next hour crawling into town.
Parked at the tire shop to wait for them to open at 8am and replace the shredded tire. Next time not only borrow trailer but ask for the spare !
Back on the road at 8:30 minus $80 arrived at Nundle bought ice for the eski and headed out to Swamp creek to set up camp.
Found a nice spot with some shade trees across the bridge and pitched our tents a little away from the other two compers there.
By the time we finished setting up camp and eating lunch we were all tired and wanted to just relax for a while.
At around 3 we decided to go for a drive and explore the creek, did a few test pans along the way on the road side of the creek but did not find any colour. So decided to drive a little further and found a place to park. This spot had a nice rock bar and small rappids that we could cross to the other side of the creek. Noticed a few places were people had dug out along the banks and a little further away on the gravel bar there were a few places where others had dug down about half a metre.
We filled our pans from one hole and after washing them out found a few small specks.
We did a few more pans from the same hole with the same result and decided to head back to camp for the afternoon.
Got talking to one of the other campers who had brought his young son and daughter out from Tamworth to do some fishing and run a couple of river sluices. We had noticed them parked off the road near the creek on our drive out from town.
They were cleaning out the fines before it got dark, panning from a large tub of creek water, they got some nice colour with a few nice pickers and a small nugget.
Later we spent the evening around the fire drank a few beers and tAlked till it was time to sleep.
Woke early Sunday and the wife and I drove to the same spot we had been the day before with the intention of excevating and enlarging the same hole. Spent the next few hours panning and collecting a a small amount in our snuffers. Before lunch a local couple came down and set up a river sluice a bit further up the creek from where we were panning . Just before lunch we walked up to introduce our selves and see how they were doing. We had not seen a river sluice in action before so was curious ro see how they were doing.
Turns out that after about 2 hours of crevicing and using a yabbie pump they had next to nothing to show for their efforts.
After lunch we both got stuck into expanding the hole and taking it a down deeper after removing some large rocks we got into some hard packed gravel and some flat disk shaped gold flakes came out in the pans .
We spent the whole afternoon panning out and collecting a small amount of gold in our snuffers.
Swamp creek camp grounds have a long drop toilet but no showers or pottable water. So before heading back to camp we went for a swim in a large pool of water to wash and shampoo.
Back at Camp I cleaned out the snuffer bottles to try and remove the black sand that got sucked up with the gold while my wife and her neice cooked our evening meal.
The campers we talked with the night before had packed up afterlunch and headed home so we had the camp fire to our selves. After a long day digging and panning and a few beers later around the camp fire relaxing we were feeling very contented. The wife and I would have been happy to spend a week there if we could.
Monday morning we woke early ate breakfast and packed up camp so we could head off to explore the rest of Nundle before driving home.
Drove out to Hanking Rock look out and took a few pictures before driving back down to Nundle.
All in all we probably only found less then a tenth of a gram and a few small saphires for our efforts but it was a good few days away.
