Very interesting reading John. The numbers quoted are absolutely staggering and it is hard for we modern folk to comprehend the destruction. Man's ability to destroy each certainly took a huge leap into an industrial scale in The Great War.
Thanks for sharing.

as many as 150 shells fell for every square meter of this battlefield.

Over 60 million shells were fired into this area between February 21 and December 18, 1916, killing 305,440 men out of 708,777 casualties

Yes when you read that they dropped 720,000,000 (720 million) bombs and mortars on a 1400sq Kms area that works out to be a total of around 514 per square meter and that 1 in 5 failed to explode which means that there are some where around 144 million bombs that are still laying there waiting to explode.

Where does one begin to start and they also said that some of these bombs are only about 6" below the surface, What Horrors did our Grand parents have to endure. This is why Anzac Day is remembered.

Lest We Forget

Amen,

It makes our every day troubles look frail in comparison and I hope it does for years to come, The figures they quote really drives it home, I have found fair amount of WW II bombs fragments and bullets etc but they are non-existent compared to what these guys are digging up everyday, And 100 years after they stopped bombing the place their bombs are still killing people, 630 people that should be honoured as those who fought because they have given all their Tomorrows so others can have a Yesterday,

Brave People No Doubt.

2 years ago we did a tour of the Somme and I cried, literally, what a waste .

There are a lot of laws in France re ww1 battle fields about disturbing/finding human remains, and 1 of these is that if a farmer finds any remains he MUST notify the authorities who the come and research and recover any remains, but this law also has a down side to it.

1 of the highest points on the Somme was a place called Mouquet Farm and it's estimated that there are between 3000 and 6000 bodies on it, BUT, untill the farmer, who is watched very closely , unearths any remains the authorities are unable to take any action. The farmer sticks to sheep farming very carefully.
cheers Keith

Hate to think what ww3 will be like.

I can't remember who said it but here's a scary quote. ...... I don't know what weapons will be used in ww3 but in ww4 it will be sticks and rocks.

because nothing will be left after ww3 ... will go back to barbarian era and neanderthal ... biological weapons and atomic bombs ain`t something that we want to see ....
