Hi all
As a way of introduction as a teenager in the late 70s growing up in Castlemaine Vic rather than head off after school for a kick of the footy I was the odd ball who had a set up on my bike that could take a pick , shovel and pan and head to the creeks in search of gold, even build my own demountable cradle to put on the back of my bike. An old timer showed me how find gold in the creeks and If there was any gold in the creeks I could find it even when others would say there is nothing there.
I saved all my pennies and bought one of the cheapest most primitive detectors available at the time and Dad would drop me off in the bush early in the morning , I would head out into the wilderness for the day and he would pick me up at the end of the day ( you would not contemplate that with your own 15yr old these days). I only ever found 1 small 1oz nugget but had a ball.
Then year 12 and Uni came around, career and family and all the prospecting went out the window. That interest couldnt stay dormant for ever and in the last couple of years it has returned after showing my best mate how and where to find gold in the creeks around Castlemaine. We have a minelab GPX 5000 that has hardly been used, and have been slucing when we can with a Gold Hog mini highbanker and a Gold Fox Lil Monster which must be said is a ripper little unit.
The technology has come a long way and I only wish I had what we have available today back then, I would not have had to work again ! with so much more time for prospecting and fishing!
